Upon arriving we were greeted by the BB owner: "You are late. Check-in is between 4pm and 6pm. I was just about to have my dinner". Well, it was 7:20pm indeed but we were on holiday, traveling Scotland (from Isle of Skye at that day - did some pretty long hiking earlier) so we just hadn't thought to check check-in time - other BB (we stayed in 6 on our trip) had more generous windows of, say 4pm-8pm, btw. Needless to say we didn't feel welcomed after such a reception (and no cakes are coffee (like others mentioned) for us due to our bad behavior probably). The room was OK, quite clean (just a couple of spiders probably from the garden). Not soundproof at all unfortunately (we were woken up at 6am by the noises of running water and somebody *walking* in the nearby rooms (creaky floors). No WiFi - the long list of rules in the room among other things explained that although they did have WiFi but due to other neighbors trying to use it they no longer give the passwords to guests (? nice to know they do have WiFi). Yes, and the shower had quite a weak water flow. It was the cheapest B&B in our trip so many things can probably explained by it. But it was definitely the least friendly B&B.

Ouch, I had not expected this especially after our conversation at breakfast and check out, it seemed to me that aside from the check in situation you were happy with your stay at Mayfield and you never mentioned any of this when checking out, in fact I thought you were very pleasant guests at our home. However since this was not the case I will take your comments on board and endeavour to address them for you.
Our normal check in time is between 4pm and 6pm and this is clearly stated during the online booking process you followed before your final commitment to the booking. It is also stated in the hard copy of the booking sent to you by the online booking website. We also make this clear to guests who book direct with us whether by phone or email. Having said that if any guest wishes to arrange a later check in we will do our best to accommodate them, and we do have guests contact us after making an online booking to ask if this is possible because their filght times make a normal check difficult or they have a busy touring schedule. We only ask to be kept in the loop so we can adapt and are prepared for you when you arrive.
You could have telephoned us on the day of arrival to let us know you were running late, many guests make courtesy calls to this end. We do actually want you to enjoy your holiday and your stay at Mayfield.
All guests checking in at Mayfield are offered afternoon tea/coffee and home baked cakes. I am sorry but your check in was in the evening. Guests checking in later usually leave again fairly quickly in order to go and have an evening meal and are not interested in tea/coffee and cakes.
I would also apologise for the spiders. We live in the country and whilst we do use a harmless natural repellent to deter them, your 2 obviously ignored this. Had you asked I would have willing collected them and returned them to the garden.
I am pleased you brought to my attention the notice in the guest information folder in your room regarding the WiFi access. There is full WiFi access for guests at Mayfield and a computer is currently provided in the guest lounge for those without their own computer. We did have a problem in the past with visitors staying at other B&Bs near us (as stated on the notice) trying to access our network by standing or parking outside Mayfield, not with our neighbours (as you said), and we had to withdraw the WiFi until we were able to resolve the problem. Mayfield has a dedicated WiFi network for guests which requires an access code, previously it did not. The information has now been corrected. Had you questioned this you would have been given the code or you could have used the computer provided.
Clearly there was a break in communications between us for which for my part I apologise. I am also aware that the basic principle is that the customer is always right. However our endeavour to please all of the people all of the time cannot always work. All guests have different needs and expectations, and clearly yours were not met by us.
