“Not a Travel Lodge to return to”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2011

We've stayed in a lot of Travel Lodges around the country and this is by far the most disappointing one. We were given two quite flat pillows and asked for another two. We were told that as the hotel was full they might be difficult to find! After a second reminder an hour later, two additional pillows were found. The bed was certainly not the usual which we'd come to expect from a Travel Lodge. It was extremely soft and uncomfortable. We mentioned at reception the following morning that we wouldn't want to be in Room 36 again as the bed was far too soft. We were told that all rooms in the Travel Lodge had the same beds. I guess such a soft bed might suit some - not us! The staff were less friendly and helpful than normal.

Knowing that all beds are the same, we would certainly have to book up another Travel Lodge in the area in the future. We pay to have a good comfortable sleep - not possible at Dorking!

Room Tip: Room 36 is right at the end of a corridor so nobody passes by. But, it's no good if you want a...

“Appaling, dirty and smelly”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

We had 3 rooms booked as my friend was getting married nearby. I had to wait 10 minutes to check in, there was no queue and it was during the afternoon but nobody was at reception, had to repeatedly press the bell.

My Sister and her fiance checked into her room later that day and upon entering the room they were greeted by an overwhelming stench of cigarette smoke (this has been a no smoking hotel for some years). We had later found out from other guests in the hotel that some guests had been asked to leave the hotel as thery were smoking cigarettes. I'm pretty certain that in a hotel which has a no smoking policy current regualtions state that if there has been smoke in the room then it should be closed to the public for 24 hours, this was clearly not the case.

My parents checked into their room quite late as the wedding we were attending started at 3pm the same time as the hotels check in, they tried to check in at midnight and it took 20 minutes for the night porter to arrive at the reception counter, he only arrived after my dad telephoned the hotel whilst standing in reception. When they arrived in their room it was clear that it had not been cleaned since the previous occupants as the waste bin was full, there were half drunk bottles of water on the side and the bed linen was stained so they had to sleep on towels.

My room on the other hand was reasonably clean on the surface, but it still had it flaws. The beds are shocking, you could see the dip in the centre of the bed whilst it was made. I woke up on the Sunday morning to find that I had a few insect bites on my back which had not been there the night before.

The only positive we could take from this experience was we know never to book there again.

Room Tip: Try to get one not over looking the car park as there is a large biker community who seem to congreg...

“Terrible bed and shared towels”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2011

We arrived late for a night before a flight from Gatwick. The bed base and mattress were so bad (saggy and springs poking through) that we had to put the mattress on the floor. We requested a different room but they were full.
Next morning, early, we showered and found there was only 1 bath towel and 1 small hand towel. This is apparently all we should expect according to customer service.
I wrote to Travel Lodge customer service, who tell me that beds are checked very regularly and the towels were correct. They did, how ever, refund 50% of the room cost for which I thank them, but I would now never stay there again until they do a refurbish.
I also find it a very poor standard to expect 2 people to share bath towels. I run a B&B and would never ever expect people to have to share towels........
