The Mitre hotel is a very old, "traditional" style hotel that makes the most of being opposite the main entrance to Hampton Court Palace and being on the banks of the Thames.
Was slightly worried about parking, having looked at previous reviews, but there were a few spaces when we arrived on the Friday evening so double-parked and left keys at reception. The guy on reception was very welcoming and check-in was quick. Only snag was that having booked a room for 3 people there was no extra bed. This was swiftly resolved and we ended up in a slightly larger room with a sofa-bed which was great. We liked the free mini-bar and although the decanters of complimentary spirits weren't full, there was plenty for a couple of drinks of an evening. The Bathroom was spacious, clean and had a decent shower, although overall it felt slightly tired. Beds were comfortable and not too much noise from other rooms; being an old hotel it comes with creaking floorboards. On arrival we were warned about a wedding on the Saturday night, and it might be very noisy as the reception room was just below our window, but they promised it would end at midnight. The music was very loud but it ended abruptly at 11:30 and we had a very peaceful night.
Breakfast was included in the Historic Package, as were open tickets to Hampton Court, and it was a pretty standard buffet type offering. However there were no alternatives for vegetarians, which was a bit disappointing. You could get a Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese bagel to order along with eggs cooked to order which was a bonus.
No free Wi-Fi was a bore - but I managed to find a BT-Openzone/BT-Fon access point so it wasn't really a problem.
We didn't eat at the main restaurant - opting instead for the Square Olive just over the Bridge - see other review - and Zizzi another night.
Checkout was quick and efficient and there were no un-expected extras,
Overall a really relaxing weekend break, with the hotel being a great base for visiting Hampton Court and dining out.
Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the Palace or the Thames. Anne of Cleves had the Sofabed and overlook...
