On strolling into The Crown one is greeted by an abundance of cheap, no thrills, ‘art’. No thrills, a concept that this restaurant delivers very well! We had an awful experience!
We were rushed into ordering, only for the waitress to return seconds later informing us that dishes were no longer available and that we must alternative choice. Second choices made and wine ordered the waitress leaves us, not to be seen again!
Starters arrive and to The Crown credit the mackerel pate was quite good, however after this brief highlight the rest of the meal slipped back to our no thrills dining experience! No wine had arrived after 15 minutes, starters finished, we again asked for our wine. – It arrived minutes later, plonked on our table with no apology and with no intent of it being poured. Fortunately admits our group was an experienced wine drinker who was able to distribute the wine before anyone suffered from severe dehydration.
The main courses were the real let down; a chicken salad made with carcass pickings that wouldn’t have featured in even the most frugal home-cook’s risotto or soup. I’m a strong supporter of head-to-tail cooking, however this dish had taken it a little far especially when paying a premium for the pleasure.
Another member of our party suffered an awful portion of ham, egg and chips. A pub favorite that requires little talent or training to produce proved a bit too much for The Crown. Ham was cheap and underwhelming and the soggy chips tasted (and dripped) with old fryer oil.
The Crown’s greatest failing was not its awful food or sloppy service, but its ability or inability to deal with a complaint. Having politely expressed our discontent the staff took it upon themselves to make us feel as unwelcome as possible.
We were informed by the Duty Manager that the whole experience was his fault and that he should have ‘paid us more attention!’ A kind gesture, but not exactly what was needed.
The following day we sent an email to the General manager of The Crown to offer some feedback as to how the venue runs in his absence. Later that day we received a response that simply said, ‘ so sorry we didn’t meet your expectations last night. Thanks for your feedback. Kind regards, Steve.‘
Well thanks Steve we certainly will not be returning and we would advise anyone planning a visit to go elsewhere!
