“Really Poor!”

On strolling into The Crown one is greeted by an abundance of cheap, no thrills, ‘art’. No thrills, a concept that this restaurant delivers very well! We had an awful experience!

We were rushed into ordering, only for the waitress to return seconds later informing us that dishes were no longer available and that we must alternative choice. Second choices made and wine ordered the waitress leaves us, not to be seen again!

Starters arrive and to The Crown credit the mackerel pate was quite good, however after this brief highlight the rest of the meal slipped back to our no thrills dining experience! No wine had arrived after 15 minutes, starters finished, we again asked for our wine. – It arrived minutes later, plonked on our table with no apology and with no intent of it being poured. Fortunately admits our group was an experienced wine drinker who was able to distribute the wine before anyone suffered from severe dehydration.

The main courses were the real let down; a chicken salad made with carcass pickings that wouldn’t have featured in even the most frugal home-cook’s risotto or soup. I’m a strong supporter of head-to-tail cooking, however this dish had taken it a little far especially when paying a premium for the pleasure.

Another member of our party suffered an awful portion of ham, egg and chips. A pub favorite that requires little talent or training to produce proved a bit too much for The Crown. Ham was cheap and underwhelming and the soggy chips tasted (and dripped) with old fryer oil.

The Crown’s greatest failing was not its awful food or sloppy service, but its ability or inability to deal with a complaint. Having politely expressed our discontent the staff took it upon themselves to make us feel as unwelcome as possible.

We were informed by the Duty Manager that the whole experience was his fault and that he should have ‘paid us more attention!’ A kind gesture, but not exactly what was needed.

The following day we sent an email to the General manager of The Crown to offer some feedback as to how the venue runs in his absence. Later that day we received a response that simply said, ‘ so sorry we didn’t meet your expectations last night. Thanks for your feedback. Kind regards, Steve.‘

Well thanks Steve we certainly will not be returning and we would advise anyone planning a visit to go elsewhere!

“A bit of a curates egg”

This is a boutique hotel that nearly works.
It has a lot of good points, such as helpful , friendly staff, good atmosphere, and lovely sofas.
But it needs to sharpen up its act especially in the rooms.
Our room had a chipped bath , a badly stained and flaking dressing table, not very artfully hidden by a tray.and the paint in the bathroom was also peeling, not a good look for a chic bathroom with lovely toiletries.
The room was also boiling hot, and as it was on a corner, rather noisy, especially as we had 3 dusbin lorry rounds, the first at 6 am. The blinds were not adequate to keep the yellow street lights from glowing in all night., all of which made for a bad nights sleep, altho the bed was very comfy.
I realise the external things are harder, ( but not impossible) to address, but the shabby side of chic needs to be remedied.

Room Tip: Dont choose the corner room.

“Very good indeed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2011

We stumbled upon this place by accident whilst on the hoof and looking for somewhere to stay whilst exploring this area of the East coast. We originally only intended staying for a night but ended up asking for a second night because we liked it so much. Really crisp and modern throughout and very well thought out in design terms. Really good relaxed service - oh and great breakfast!!
Yes slightly more expensive than a bog standard budget hotel but worth every penny in our opinion.
Will definitely recommend this place to friends and relatives and will go there again when next in the area.

Room Tip: If possible ask for an upgrade to a superior room.

“Friendly and relaxed, spacious light well appointed rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

This was our second stay here and we were again very happy with the room, the food and the staff. The atmosphere is laid back without compromising on service; staff were all friendly and helpful. The food (breakfast and dinner) was delicious and the wine list varied and not too expensive. Last time we stayed (midweek) it was a bit noisy in the early morning with traffic but this time (Saturday and Sunday night) we had no noise at all and slept soundly.

The rooms are on the expensive side but are very well appointed, also the hotel is in the middle of town and close to the quay so there is everything you need nearby. Its also within walking distance of the station.

A proper armchair would have been a welcome addition as the small chair and two seater metal armed sofa were not made to relax in, but the bed was large and very comfortable.

I am sure we'll be back.

Room Tip: Room 10 was a standard room but well appointed and away from the bar and outside eating area . It ha...

“Great restaurant/bar”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2011

In woodbridge there are a lot of pubs to choose from for having drinks or dinner, what makes the Crown stand out is it's individuality. It had modern light decor and comfortable sofa seating areas, more like a wine bar than a typical country pub. A little pricey but worth it for a special occasion.
