“Don't stay here if you want a good night's sleep.....”

At first appearances, the Garden Lodge is extremely well presented, clean and homely. Our problem came in the evening when we retired to bed - we had returned after a night out with friends and two other parties were in the rooms either side of ours. We could hear everything.....conversation, toileting, snoring, farting... the lot. Not pleasant and definitely not private. We left this accommodation in the middle of the night because my husband couldn't stand the racket from the other rooms! We did speak to the owners but they didn't seem particularly interested in helping us. I can't believe that other guests hadn't raised this issue with them - they told us it hadn't been a problem for any other guest. We did pay the owners before we left because I don't believe in ripping people off (we called another hotel in the area and got a room there instead - that weekend cost us a bl**dy fortune!). I subsequently complained about the B&B to the AA, who have given this place 4 stars. If you read the AA's criteria for a 4 star B&B there is no way this property meets the standards for noise. The AA never gave us a satisfactory response to the complaint though...... so no-where else for us to go but TripAdvisor.

On the website this place looked fantastic but it sadly doesn't live up to its promises. The thing that annoyed us most was the owners' blatant denial that sound bleed was an issue and that it had never happened before! Avoid!

“Lovely B&B, although the walls are a bit thin!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2009

We visited Garden Lodge B&B (which is about 3 or 4 miles outside of Newmarket) for one night as we were going to Newmarket Nights. Location is lovely and peaceful and good for getting out of the races as not many cars go off in this direction (it's about £10 in a taxi). There are three rooms sharing a log cabin in a beautiful garden. Rooms are a good size, with your own shower room. Tea and coffee making facilities, TV, fridge, ironing board and iron, etc. Very comprehensive information on the surroundings, recommendations for somewhere to eat etc. All good. What's not so good is that the walls are quite thin, so you can hear what people are saying in the other rooms. And what TV channel they're listening to. And when they're showering. You get the idea. Lovely hosts who were there to meet us as we drove up. Very nice breakfast (served in their dining room) and a swift checkout. I would recommend to a friend for one or two nights but any more than that, then I think the lack of privacy would get on their nerves!

“Fantastic B & B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2007

We stayed in this B & B in July 2007. It is a couple of miles from Newmarket. There is 3 rooms in a lodge behind the family home. The owners are very friendly and more than helpful. The rooms are beautiful and have everything you could wish for. It is obvious the owners have put alot of effort into the comfort of their clients. The breakfasts were large and tasty. There is a little pub around the corner and tiny villages with lovely thatched houses in the area. I would highly recommend this B & B
