“An absolute Gem with such friendly service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

If you want superb food with incredibly friendly service you must go to the Black Lion. Had lunch there on Saturday 4 February and was so impressed am booking to go back on my Birthday next month. We had had pre lunch drinks seated in comfy settees in an olde world lounge that overlooks the lovely Long Melford Green. Michael, the hotel manager, is very very friendly and really wants you to enjoy being there and is very helpful - nothing is too much trouble.

When you go through to the restaurant it has a lovely relaxing ambience- log fire is burning.
The food is absolutely delicious and the portion size is very good. it is several levels above what you might expect and the chefs are undisputably of the highest calibre! A very extensive menu so you have no problems in finding something you like. The difficulty is what not to have!. There were 6 of us and everyone remarked how outstanding all the 3 courses were. We stayed for 3 hours and the waitresses were superb and Michael kept coming over. He obviously loves his job and it shows in his enthusiasm. We all fell in love with Melford the labradoodle who laid in the hotel foyer.
None of us were staying over in the hotel but its the type of place that made you wish you were, and you just knew that you would be so very well looked after if you did. Cannot recommend it enough - an absolute hidden treasure! Tom W

“Sunday Lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We had a very nice Sunday lunch, three generations all having a good meal.
Choice was what I expected in terms of roast beer, chicken, pork etc.. and served well in a clean linen in pleasant dinning room. I thought it was great value but perhaps I am out of touch with UK prices.

“We had a good welcome from the receptionist and apart from one member of staff the rest of the staff were friendly.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

Our room was good – it was clean, the bed was very comfortable and we had a view of the Green. My husband had fish for his dinner which he said was excellent. I had shepherds pie which was good but I would have liked a smaller portion and more vegetables. I have also got a bit tired of food being presented in an artistic fashion. This presentation occurred at breakfast as well which I feel is definitely overdone. This, of course is a very personal preference and other guests would be perfectly happy with food being presented in the chef’s own artistic way. Both meals were a bit slow – this was fine for the evening meal but ¾ hour for breakfast we felt was a bit long. To sum up this hotel was absolutely fine and we just had a few very personal niggles.

“pleasant surprise”

We stayed with friends the weekend before Christmas. Usually, we stay at The Swan in Lavenham, the weekend before Christmas, but have found the last 2 years they require a minimum of 2 nights stay! So having looked in the Suffolk area, we came across The Black Lion and enquired as to whether one nights stay would be acceptable and booked! We all had a fabulous stay, and all feel that The Black Lion has more to offer than The Swan at Lavenham. Long Melford had some lovely shops. The rooms were great, the food excellent & the service fantastic! We shall certainly be coming back!
