“Very enjoyable stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2011

We enjoyed our stay at Wood Hall very much. We had a warm and friendly welcome from Susan and Patrick. The room was large with antique furniture and many pictures and had been well thought out. The bed was very comfortable with an electric blanket. Breakfast was served in the Georgian dining hall which had windows all around and a log burning stove. It was plentiful with local fruit juice, fruit, cereals and homemade jams, the ‘full English’ was beautifully cooked using local ingredients and was delicious. We enjoyed chatting with other guests at breakfast.

We took up Susan’s suggestion of hiring an audio guide (from the Lavenham pharmacy) to listen to while looking at the ancient buildings in Lavenham. Most interesting – although if you visit in winter be prepared to wrap up warm! An excellent place to stay for a weekend with many good places to eat in the local area .

“Delightful, beautifully run, charming hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2011

My wife and I stayed here for one night as a base to visit some of the beautiful wool towns in the area. We arrived early on a cold winter's evening and were warmly greeted by the hosts who could not have been friendlier and more charming. The single negative experience of one of the previous reviewers was a total mystery to us. We found our hosts to be extremely helpful and hospitable throughout our stay. And the dog was a sweetie!

Our room was spotless, gloriously huge and full of charm, Lots of books to choose from to help you get to sleep - not that you'd need them because the bed was so comfortable. Breakfast the following morning was a joy. We went for the works (well why not when you're on holiday?!) and they delivered in spades. Everything fresh, perfectly cooked, local and utterly delicious.

All in all a truly great stay. I'd recommend this lovely place to anyone.

“Staying at Wood Hall is not to be missed.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2010

Wood Hall is a wonderful old Georgian English country house on the side of a quiet road close to Lavanham. Across the road from it are rolling fields that stretch off to the horizon. We feel very fortunate that we stayed there. Our host, the Nisbetts, were very kind, interesting and hospitable.
Our room was great! It could be one of those wonderful rooms in a Masterpiece
tv program. one that is set in a beautiful old English country house that is elegant, but not overly grand. The bed was big and very comfortable. There was a lovely tea tray set up with an electric pot, teas ,coffees, chocolate, biscuits, etc.. The room had antique furniture, lots of books about people and places of interest in the area. The bath room is large and sunny with a great big bath tub to stretch out in. There were lovely linens, lots of lotions, soaps.
Breakfast prepared by Susan Nisbett is not to be missed. When we entered the dining room sunlight was streaming in the windows. A fire was crackling in the huge fireplace. The table gleamed, the linen napkins were crisply ironed and the yellow roses on the table were beautiful. I haven't even gotten to the breakfast which was everything you would hope the perfect English breakfst to be. The orange juice was squeezed for us just before breakfast. The apple juice from a neighbor's orchard was better than any I've had. I had creamy scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and local bacon. My husband had a full English breakfast with the best sausages he had on our trip. Susan Nisbett knows and cares about food and only presents the best.
I could go on and on. Staying at Wood Hall provides a perfect old-fashined English country house experience with the added bonus of the hosts, the Nisbetts. They are lovely, thoughtful people.

“Delightful property with delightful host.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2010

Wood Hall is a beautiful english country house, Georgian to front and richly beamed Tudor to the rear. The dining hall is splendid with an arched Tudor brick fireplace and tasteful furniture.

On arrival we were offered afternoon tea and were made very welcome. There is plenty of parking and the property can be easily found.

The bedrooms are very comfortable and typically english. Armchairs, writing desk, lots of books, interesting prints and pictures on the walls all make this house a delightful place in which to stay. There are tea and coffee making facilities in the bedroom and every toiletry imaginable in the bathroom - Susan our host has a keen eye for detail.

Susan Nesbitt is a delightful friendly hostess who has thought of everything for her guests, The breakfasts are superb - do try the locally made pork sausages, they are delicious. There is also a healthy option of cereals, yogurts, musli and no processed orange juice around here! It is all freshly squeezed.

We ate in the evening at The Angel in Lavenham which was superb and recommended by Susan.

We shall certainly stay here again.

“Lovely house, but didn't feel particularly welcome.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2010

The house is beautiful, and I can see why it's "old world" charm would appeal to overseas guests. But to us it felt claustrophic - we are both polite and presentable professional people, but didn't feel particularly welcome. Small examples - when we checked in we said that we were meeting friends at a local pub/restaurant for dinner (as part of a wedding party), and were asked by the owner if we would mind not being back much later than 11pm! On a Friday night! We weren't planning on partying till dawn, but we were paying guests, not her naughty children. Talking of which - whilst the bedroom was well set out, it was clearly the daughter's old bedroom (everything monogramed with her name), and again made us feel like we were imposing rather than paying money to stay at a professionally run B&B. We were also taken aback to be greeted by two large dogs when we arrived - and that very little effort was made to stop them jumping up or running about - that is fine if you are a dog lover, but if you are running a business is something I think guests should be told about in advance of booking in case of phobias, allergies etc. Breakfast the next morning was excellent, but without asking my girlfriend was given a smaller cooked breakfast than me. All in all we wouldn't recommend I'm afraid.
