“Trying hard...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2009

I stayed at The Swallow in Stockton on a business trip in June.

It is easy to dwell on the negatives so I will! The car park was like driving into Beirut, but that may have been because of building work... a large multi-storey with a connecting corridor to the hotel, no security that I could see so lucky I was in a hire car! The corridor which led to Reception had an awful smell which I cannot explain and was such that almost upon arrival I'd vowed not to return. The restaurant and bar was standard issue, over-priced beer and average hotel food, whilst stepping outside the hotel deposited you amongst a hoody-clad community of wasted youth!

Of course that's not the fault of the hotel, after all you chose to stay in central Stockton! The plus sides were a clean & tidy hotel room, mercifully free of the corridor smell, and helpful staff, especially in the restaurant. Given that the Swallow chain had given them so little to work with, they were making every effort to do the best they could in the cirumstances.

If you want to stay in central Stockton and have a poor sense of smell, go for it!

“Totally central with a top restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2009

We made a last minute booking, based soley on location for the Stockton International Riverside Festival and feel we landed on our feet. The Hotel opens right onto Stockton High street, has free parking in Shopping centre multistorey and has almost immediate links to routes out of the town. I would recommend to book ahead online for best rates and the weekend dinner/bed and breakfast was a bargain at £160 for two.

The restaurant was a real treat. Friendly staff and tasty food. The room was a decent size with a good bath and shower.

This hotel fulfilled all the requirements of a good hotel but you will spot small things that require work. Things like missing buttons inside lift, bathroom door not closing and old looking bed sheets (although bed turned out to be confortable)

Its very easy to overlook the small things because all the important requirements of a hotel stay are easily met. Just a little cosmetic investment is needed.

“excellant hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 May 2009

just come back from a 5 day coach holiday based at the Swallow Hotel, Stockton, read some bad reviews and wasn't sure about staying but must say my fears were unfounded.

the hotel was fabulous, food was excellant, staff pleasant and friendly at all times, room was spotlessley clean and was cleaned to the same high standard every day.

The day before we went there had been a flood in the hotel but the staff coped with the situation well.

on the negative side, It was hit and miss wether the lifts in the hotel were working and sometimes they were so slow it was quicker to walk up to my fourth floor room, also the service in the dining room was a little slow on a couple of evenings but this was made up for with the excellant food.

Also there in no porterage at this hotel and you have to carry your own bags up to your rooms, I didn't mind, but other people on the coach were elderly with ages ranging from 50-75 and I think it was bad to expect them to carry their own bags as some were also infirm.

But this aside an excellant time was had by all!

“Brilliant Weekend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 March 2009

What a brilliant weekend. The food was out of this world and definate value for money. tThe food would grace any five star hotel.
Stephen, Jonathan and Samanth in the restraunt were great, friendly and helpfull.
The hallways were a little bit jaded, but the rooms were excellent.
Three star hotel with five star food and service.

“Tacky, in need of refurb generally”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 March 2009

On arrival at the hotel , which is no easy excercise having to firstly find the multi storey car park and then carry cases down four flights of stairs to reception - the first impression is tacky and generally well worn. The executive rooms are very basic, a double bed with two chairs - it certainly does not match the photographs shown on their website. There is wallpaper peeling off the walls and torn curtains = the previous guests had even left us a matleser on the floor, so housekeeping not that good. The bar area is average but again well worn and the staff are average - nothing great about the service apart from one young man who worked in the Portcullis Restaurant who was both helpful and attentive. Our evening meal was again average nothing great to write home about. I would not return as it is very overpriced for the standard of accommodation.
