“Don't stay here”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

I was expecting a lovely stay at this hotel, and a room that looked liked those used on their website and in their advertising. I was sorely disappointed, the first room we had was tiny, the carpet not even hoovered. I hate complaining but felt compelled to and we were offered another room and £20 pounds off our bill. The new room was dingy and tired, stained walls etc. The breakfast was the worst I've ever had - a small piece of tasteless fish for me, and my son's poached eggs were inedible. I am completely at a loss to understand how this hotel has received any decent reviews on this site. I wrote to Best Western and got half my money back. There are some really nice places to stay in and around Wells - my advice is to choose anywhere but the Swan.

I was surprised to read these comments, particularly as Rachael met with me (the General Manager of the hotel) and subsequently received a written response to her complaints on 17 October.

Rachael stayed with us for 1 night on 1st of October last year. At the time of her stay she completed a Guest Questionnaire rating our Reception ‘Very Good’ and our Service ‘Good’. Rachael also commented on our pleasant staff and the excellent shower in her bathroom.

We examine and log every completed Guest Questionnaire. During the month of Rachael’s stay 93% of guests gave the hotel an ‘Overall Impression’ rating of ‘Good’, ‘Very Good’ or ‘Excellent’, so her comments do not reflect the opinions of the vast majority of our guests.

The hotel has 48 bedrooms and in the gallery section of our website we show images of each of the room categories that we have.

“Birthday treat”

I was taken to Wells, Somerset for a Birthday treat and we stayed at the Swan Hotel. The location was perfect right in the centre opposit the Cathedral gardens. The room was delightful and bathroom spacious, breakfast is buffet first course followed by a delicious cooked course which was not the usual greasy fry up. The hotel has it's own car park which is a definate plus
We decided to eat at the hotel in the evenings purely for convenience it was a good choice all my meals were delicious my partner didn't like one of the soups.
The main shopping street is just around the corner and the twice a week market at the end of the road.
The cathedral is well worth a visit it is like a tardus having all these little rooms hidden away
Wookey hollow, Cheddar Gorge, Clarkes Shopping village, Street, are all close and worth a visit.
Finally but most importantly the staff are tremendious every one of them ready to help, assist and give a happy, pleasant service.
We shall return it's like going home.

Room Tip: Look for the offers ask for best deals we had an excellent deal of £165 per night for Bed, Breakfas...

“A good Sunday lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I had had a bad Sunday lunch experience at the Swan a few years ago so was a bit reluctant to return but was persuaded by some good reports. I went in a party of ten and was immediately impressed by the helpfulness of all the staff in the bar with drinks and menus. When we got to the table the good experience continued, the starters came promptly and were unanimously approved of. I had the pork for my main course which came as 2 half inch thick slices, it was consequently a bit tough so I didn't enjoy it, I did point out to the waitress that roast pork traditionally comes in thinner slices and not like sirloin steak and she said she'd pass it on. Other than that the vegetables were cooked nicely and everybody agreed that the service was excellent. It's apparent that everybody at the Swan is making an effort to look after their customers and I recommend it.

“Excellent room with a terrific view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

We had a superb room with an excellent 4 poster bed and stunning views of the cathedral. The room's furnishings matched the traditional atmosphere of the hotel and the bed was wonderfully comfortable. It has a position at the very heart of wells with its front overlooking the front of the cathedral.

The only blemishes were small niggles but... the bath had a rain head shower, excellent, except for me at 6'3" it was only as high as my eyebrows. In addition the cold tap of the bath was unscrewing and the radiators in bathroom and main room desperately needed bleeding; both only provided heat from the bottom couple of inches and gurgled loudly when the heating started. Also there was no mention at booking that some of the public areas, including the lounge, were being refurbished as we stayed.

A great room with a great view only slightly let down by a few plumbing details. Get a new plumber and warn me of work being done and it would have been full marks.

Room Tip: Get the room with the 4 post bed at the top of the hotel facing the Cathedral. Go out of season for...
