This was last minute idea for us to celebrate our anniversary, so happy to pay for the most expensive room, Conygar. Location wise the hotel is well situated with handy car parking behind, although a tight squeeze.
Reception is the Cellar Bar, a good indication this is an Inn not the 4 star hotel it purports to be. Bar manager was ok and took us up to the room, pointed out one key for the room and the other for the front door. Sadly forgetting to mention the lock needed replacing, the door jamb and lock had been forced open at some point. One key (wrong one as it turned out) seemed to lock the door so we used that one. However, it didn’t open the door and jammed up when we came back to the room. The bar manager quickly fixed this, or so we thought. Next morning when we tried to go down for breakfast the lock didn’t budge (clearly a fire hazard). Although there are phones in the room there was no card or information pack on how to use the phone system. No major worry with a mobile phone. I called the hotel for help to get out. A woman answered who was very cheery and helpful, letting us out and said the lock would be replaced later that day, after we left. She also served breakfast and conducted the checkout!
Breakfast was well cooked and presented, although perhaps a bit sparse for some with big appetites. The breakfast room/Restaurant was fine, although tables (without table cloths) had a lot of varnish peeled away.
The room was a good size but was a disappointment. The TV was too small for a quality room of this size. One packet of biscuits seemed a bit tight too on the beverage tray, which for this price should have had filter coffee or a coffee machine rather than just instant. The carpet has suffered from staining as had the bed spread, so not so good close up. This may have been why the W “shoe tray” was placed in the room to put shoes on (first time for me). Some paint peeled off the windows which added to the lack of quality feel. The bed was good and so were the furnishings. The bathroom was a very average but functioned well, apart from one lug falling off a bath tap and the flush falling off the WC (screw missing).
The bar was nice and ale good, although the damaged glass door panel was a bit off putting (the unreinforced leaded glass has no protection as customers push the door open, shame really). Beer garden looking towards the church was nice with the evening sun, if you don’t mind the walk up the concrete ramp.
I guess demand and not quality justifies the price, shame.
