“Seriously.....one of the best places to stay in England.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 May 2009

I went with my girlfriend for 1 night over the bank holiday weekend, and it was so the right choice!
there's only 6 rooms here (which is great, as it adds an even more intimate and homely feel to the experience) and each room has a definitive style of it's own.
We stayed in the Emperor room (which I think is one of the more expensive rooms, but they do offer a last minute discount rate, and there is a significant discount!) and it was great in every way.
Firstly the size of the room...massive. Not in a "this is quite a big room," kind of way, but a huge bed and a living room/sofa area which put my living room to shame!
The decor is wonderful - very stylish whilst still maintaining a comfortable and homely feel (think vintage French style with huge gilt mirrors etc, mixed with designer holiday home luxury and you're on the right lines.)
A huge flatscreen TV with Sky and a seriously banging sound system is all part of the room, and you could comfortably invite 8-10 people back there for drinks!
The staff are great - they manage to do what so many places in England can't - offer attentive personal service without ever seeming to make an effort. On arrival, you're introduced to the staff by name, and the policy is whatever you would like, whenever.....just ask.
There's a very cool bar which is also a members club with a great B & O tv/soundsystem, as well as a steam room and sauna (which they only let 1 couple or group use at a time to keep it intimate...speaking of intimate, keep an eye out for the "adult drawer" in the room, which is a very nice touch to enhance your stay - if you get my drift!
Although we didn't eat dinner there - Hudson Bar and Grill was our choice, which is definitely worth checking out by the way - we had breakfast which was wonderful.....great food and expertly presented.
I really could not fault this place at all, and will definitely stay there again when i'm in the area.
Awesome in every way.....Go there. Now.

“Great Place”

I arranged a surprise weekend away for my Boyfriend's Birthday and opted for the 'Romantic Bath' package. This included 2 nights in the Attic room, a bottle of chilled champagne and handmade chocolates on arrival, rose petals sprinkled on the bed each day and a double 55 minute body massage. It sounded divine, and even though it was £400 I decided to go for it.

A few days before our arrival I emailed to check that they were still expecting us. I also enquired about Sunday roasts, booking the massage and if there was any chance we could arrive earlier than the 3pm check in time? Unfortunately this was the first stumbling block and the receptionist managed to get confused about my simple enquiry which totally threw me after reading the reviews I envisaged a very organised hotel. I started questioning what I was about to pay for...

We arrived into Bath and after a phone call we managed to find it (SatNav didnt pick up on it). We were welcomed by Liz and James with a pot of tea and an informal chat which was lovely. The hotel was beautiful, if not a little quirky. I loved the gorgeous fresh flowers in very room, plenty of furnishings to admire, and the homely yet elabroate feel.

Just before going up to our room, I subtley mentioned that I had booked the 'Romantic Bath' package - and much to my dismay it had been completely forgotton about! This was soon rectified but was disappointing none the less.

Our room was at the top of the house. It was exactly like in the photos on the website. Beautiful linen, gorgeous furniture and a seperate bathroom (No shower). Lovely White Company toilettries and towels.

Okay, here goes... the things that niggled me... The flat screen TV had been taken off the wall so the brackets and wires were now revealed. Another TV on the table was provided but it didnt make me feel any better about the £400 price Tag.
Our chilled Champagne and gorgeous handmade choccolates were provided (after the inital reminder on arrival)...but no sign of rose petals!
The Champagne flutes, Wine glasses (that were inconsistently different sizes) and the Hi-Ball Stems were all dirty! As were the tea cups.
The kettle had to be boiled on the floor as it didnt reach the table - By this point it was my blood that was boiling and not the kettle!

However, on a positive note the breakfasts were absolutely divine! We both had the Full English one day and on the second day I opted for the eggs benedict that was heavenly. Fresh breads, cakes, jams and oh yes the homemade granola - Lush! I loved the open plan dining room/kitchen with slate floors and fresh decor.

Our massage was lovely, my Boyf had never had one before and he absolutely loved it! Unfortunately we had to wait a while for the Steam room and Sauna to heat up as they had been turned off. However, Liz was a shining star and gave us a couple of glasses of wine to apologise for their mistake.

Nothing was too much trouble and the staff were very helpful and chatty.

I mentioned the forgotton rose petals at check out and Liz gave me a refund. I didnt have the heart to mention the other things above as James and Liz had been great. Perhaps they'll read this!

“Superb hotel, fantastic staff, lovely room!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 April 2009

My wife and I stayed at The Residence recently for a 2 night break. On arrival the staff were extremely welcoming and friendly, and we were very impressed with the grandure of the building and the various rooms that are at guests disposal, i.e. the bar, the spa area, the relaxing lounge and gardens.

Our room, the Loft Room, was spacious, clean and funky with lovely views over the Victoria Park. It also had great bathroom with the best 6 jet power shower ever and separate deep bath! We were very impressed with the attention to detail such as lovely toiletries (White Company), thick towels, candles around the bath and of course the infamous Adult draw!!! ;o)

The breakfast was delicious and we really liked the open plan kitchen / dinning room, which gave it a very homely feel.

Bath town centre is a 15 minute walk through Victoria Park, where you walk past The Royal Crescent and The Circus, therefore making it a very enjoyable way to walk off the great breakfast!

All in all, we would both highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Bath. We didnt want to leave! ;o)

“Enjoyable spa!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2009

Didn't stay in the hotel but me and my partner booked a spa treatment. Chanelle was very friendly and welcoming making sure we were okay. The spa rooms were also very nice as they had private showers. Included cotton slippers, bath robe and towels. We got to use the sauna and steam room to ourselves. We had the salt scrub treatment which was excellent however the lady my partner had, had scrubbed the same arm twice leaving his other arm unscrubbed. The massage was fantastic and very relaxing i nearly ended up falling asleep. Had two course meal there, the rib steak which was veryyy nice and suculant, very well done to the chef, also had the burger with chips which was not bad either. Overall it was great and very friendly.. Will def return and tell me friends about this place.

“Luxurious home-from-home feel and super personal service at The Residence”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2009

Have just enjoyed a weekend at The Residence where I took my mother to celebrate her 80th birthday. From the warm welcome on arrival from Liz, the Manager, to the warm hugs when we left, we could not fault the hotel.

I had reservations initially as I felt from the website that The Residence was really geared up for couples but was lured by the opulence of the rooms in the photos, and all the fantastic reviews on Trip Advisor. It is an exceptionally romantic hotel and yes, it probably is designed with couples in mind but my mum and I didn't feel out of place and were made most welcome.

I had booked The Queen Room as it looked so lovely in the photos and was just within my budget but on arrival we were upgraded to The King Room. Wow! What a room! What a bathroom! Luxurious crisp white sheets and bedding all came from The White Company, as did the toiletries in the bathroom and the towels. The bed was super comfortable, even sharing with my mother! The mini bar was well-stocked even though we didn't use it, and everything you needed was in the bottom drawer, even matches to light the candles in the bathroom!

We had a peek at The Emporer Room (a huge, impressive suite) and The Queen Room which was lovely too. Those 2 rooms plus The King Room are all on the first floor at the front of the building and overlook Victoria Park.

Had a complimentary half hour back, neck and shoulder massage and I have to say, it was one of the best massages I have ever had, shame it ended so soon! Mum enjoyed a manicure too.

The breakfasts are out of this world, everything is home made, as mentioned in previous reviews, and the granola really is to die for. Also, if you get a chance, try the ice-cream selection at dinner - we had banana flavour which was fantastic and creamy, and also Christmas Pudding flavour but what was absolutely scrummy was the Balsamic Ice-Cream! Try some if you can!

The library is very traditionally furnished - wall to wall books, old leather Chesterfield style sofas, and plenty of glossy mags. Any time you want a hot drink you just need to ask and you get. There was another sitting room towards the bar, much lighter and more contemporary than the library in its furnishings, but not so cosy.

The staff are all very friendly and welcoming, especially Liz and Victoria. We met James too who was also lovely and kind.

All in all, this is a highly luxurious home from home, with the emphasis on personal service and attention to detail. Having said that, it has a very informal atmosphere; there are no dos and don'ts as you sometimes find in large hotels, and nothing is too much trouble.

I would definitely stay here again, would recommend to all my friends who could afford it (it isn't cheap) and would like to thank all the staff who made my mother's 80th birthday so lovely. She couldn't stop talking about the hotel all the way home!
