“My stay at the YHA”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

I wasn't overly impressed by this hostel, it was up a very steep hill so i had to get a taxi there and back. My room was freezing cold a double twin room on one of the top floors, i did mention this to staff but i was informed the radiator would come on later! (It never did). It was very difficult to get up the narrow spiral stairs to my room with all my heavy luggage!

Drinks and snacks were over priced (Train prices)

On the plus side the showers were lovely and hot, and the staff were friendly! i wouldn't chose to stay here again!

“Fantastic value for Bath city”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2011

I've stayed here 3 times now. The first was a twin room at the very top of the main building (room 1 i think) which had great views over the city. The second was a 4 bed dorm with en-suite in the annex building at the back - this was very cold, although it was December. This time I was in a 6 bed dorm with en-suite in the main building (room 9). The room was lovely and warm throughout the evening but I personally found it got really cold during the night (the friends who I was sharing the room with didn't have an issue with the cold though) - but that's what you get from a period stone building! The room had a large locker for each person and a bedside light which I always appreciate. We brought all our own food for dinner and breakfast so used their kitchen and dining room which was perfectly adequate. We bought a bottle of their wine from the bar which was very nice and resonably priced. We had 2 cars with us which we left out on the main road, which was free parking. We walked down the hill (15mins to town) and back up again after visiting the Christmas market, but have used the bus in the past which stops right outside the driveway to the hostel. Our only niggle was with the shower in the en-suite - the temperature was quite erratic and the fixture was at an angle which meant you were backed into the corner with water straight into your face. A mirror in the main room would also have been nice. We are planning to come back again next year for 2 nights. I don't think you can beat the value it provides although the comfort factor could be better.

Room Tip: Try and get a room in the main building if you can.

“Extremely Disappointing”

I do not recommend this hostel, specially if you are travelling with no car. It's very far from town centre, and if you do have a car you do not have free parking as they said on their website. You are not allowed to park at the hostel, and they failed to tell me where I could park for free. I had the go across the street to an old folks home and leave the car for the night! Plus if you go out at night, you are suppose to go up the hill to where the hostel is, with no lights, in a very spooky path! The rooms are as expected in a hostel, not worth to have your own bathroom in the room as it is extremely disgusting and small...

“Ok if on a budget , but could do better !!!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2011

This is my 2nd yha experience , and paid £48 for a private ensuite room ( student style ie small ) the room had bunk beds but luckily was travelling with a friend so not bothered about beds but they were comfortable .

Was in room 12 which was in the main building , room was clean and warm , which for the price is pretty much all you can ask for . Bathroom was poor with a trickle shower but we were only there for a night literally got in at 11 pm and left at 8.30am the next day if I was there for a week it might have annoyed me but it was fine for a nite .

The walk into town is about 15 minutes downhill , stupidly decided to walk back up the hill and it nearly killed me !!!! Def not for the elderly or anyone with mobility issues but there is a bus that goes up from town ....

Overall rating not bad but the bathrooms could be updated as pretty poor but prob would return due to the price as even average b&b s in bath are £150 pn.

Room Tip: Def ask for a room in the main building

“OK hostel, but quite far out of town.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

We stayed at this hostel for 2 nights. Had an ensuite twin, but it ended up being in the Annex at the back of the main building, which was a shame. I discovered this before we got there and requested a room in the main house but they said they couldn't accommodate that. The twin room in the annex was really, really small. Though the bathroom was a decent size. The kitchen was adequate and the eating area was quite nice. It's was definitely a quiet hostel to stay in. It is up a large hill on the outskirts of town. We had a car, so wasn't an issue with luggage. We did walk down to the town on both nights though and it took about 25 minutes I think.

Room Tip: Request a room in the main house if the mansion is what attracts you to this place.
