“Shower and hot water didn't work”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

We were only staying here for 1 night so the cost played a factor in our choice. The room was large, although a little dated and in need of a lick of paint and modernisation. However the bathroom was tiny, and full of problems. The toilet took 1 hour to drain after each flush. The shower only worked with cold water, when you even tried to get warm water the shower turned into a drip - so it was impossible to have a shower. Admittedly we didn't notify the hotel of this until we checked out, as and we were going to the Bath Spa we planned to use the showers there. However, upon advising the hotel of the issues at check out - all they said was "thanks for letting me know". They were not apologetic, suprised or even seemed bothered which was very disappointing. Total lack of customer service.

“Was it a ghost hotel? But WHAT a business opportunity!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

Well, I stayed in room 108 and I have to say it has seen better days! You can't fill the kettle from the tap, it's true, but since the only power point that worked meant disconnecting the heater I decided not to bother. This is very peculiar. All the desk staff were charming and friendly, but why do they work there? Who owns it? This is prime real estate in the middle of Bath, 2 mins from Pulteney Bridge, and an investment of £1m would bring in 4 or 5 times that in revenue - there is a 4* right across the road. I truly wondered if I would Google it and find the hotel had mysteriously burned down in 1976 and left empty and I had been staying in a ghost hotel. It is faded, sad, forgotten, paint peeling of the walls, stained carpets, an EMPTY (and unopened in years) bar and lounge - but to be fair, the bathroom was spotless ( apart from the mould ) if icy cold and unheated. But it was £60 , two mins walk from the Abbey and they looked after my luggage while I shopped, so there you go. BUT - the walls are paper thin. So if you were the man in room 109, please THINK before you hold videoconferences and telephone calls between 11.45 and 2am so loudly that I could hear BOTH ends of the conversation and then watch the tv until 3am. If you can afford that long on the phone and computer, you can stay somewhere with thicker walls. One night there with a friend for shopping was fine ( apart from Mr Ignorant next door ). For longer - I probably wouldn't. But I WOULD suggest someone buys this place and turns it into what it COULD be.

“Camping would be better!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2011

This was a 2 night weekend trip to enjoy the Christmas markets. The hotel is central and the shower worked but these are the only positives. The receptionist was rude but this was trumped by a cold room that smelt of damp and black mould (which was evident on the wall paper). Curtains falling off the rail, holes where shelves and hooks might once have been. A tired lumpy bed with coverings and blankets which looked as though they might have been in use in the 70s. Switches did not work and the room had stains and fluff on the carpets. I did not want to unpack any clothes as the tiny cupboard smelt damp. Breakfast was the most basic possible (cereal and soggy toast) and I am sure they were recycling jams not completely used from open packs as small portions were offered on individual spoons! Do not pay up front, do not consider visiting and avoid room 108. The picutres on the web page must have been taken over 10 years ago and in no way reflect the current state of this building and the horrors it contains.

“Not the Ritz”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2011

Used this hotel because the function we were attending was being held here. After reading the reviews we arrived with some trepidation but found the chap on recption pleasent and helpfull the hotel itself is tired and in need of referbishment the landings do smell musty but our room was large, bright and clean the bathroom was clean the shower over the bath was less than useless but had plenty of hot water for a bath. The location is ideal for the center of Bath with lots of eating places nearby. If you want Ritz standards dont stay here but if you want a budget hotel at budget prices I suppose you could do worse.

Room Tip: Ask the guy on reception for a good room, can be noisey outside at the front at weekends from late n...

“Don't even consider it...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2011

Excellent location, staff and breakfast OK - that's the positives taken care of.

However, the rooms were tired, uncomfortable, need a lot of maintenance with things loose or not working properly (or at all), and the car park (of sorts) is a total nightmare - I pity the poor staff who suffer the frustration of frustrated customers venting about it every day. The huge number of negative reviews should have been a warning to us, so we strongly advise visitors to Bath to find somewhere else to stay, but not here.
