“Great Hotel, Great Location, Great City”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

I have stayed at the Ayrlington twice now and have enjoyed both of my stays. The hotel oozes charm and character with the rooms all being 'themed' and well decorated. The rooms are spaciuos, clean and well maintained, though they do not all have a bath, so if that is important, check before you book. The staff are all very friendly and realy couldn't be helpful enough. It has off street dedicated parking which is a huge bonus for Bath where parking can be difficult. I have read reviews where people have made note of the road noise from Pultney road which can be heard if you are at the front of the hotel. Yes, it is a busy road, but the traffick wanes as the night wares on, and the hotel is set back quite a few metres from the road so you are not right on top of the road. With the windows shut, it is barely noticeable. I have stayed in many hotels in Bath and this is one of my favourites, I can thoroughly recommend it.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have baths - check before you book

“Beautiful decor & perfectly located for exploring Bath”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2011

When booking the Ayrlington for a one-night stay on our way back to London from Cornwall, we were slightly put off but the photographs on the website of the bedrooms. The cheaper of the rooms (still quite steep at £110!) all looked rather outdated and naff, but in reality, our room (Rose) was beautiful with a lovely oriental and antiquarian vibe. Great en suite, coffee/ tea/ hot choc making facilities, a flat screen TV and fabulous views from two large windows over the gorgeous gardens of the hotel, plus Bath beyond. As we were on the top floor we were warned that the wifi might not reach us, but we didn’t really have the time to use this & so were not bothered.
Throughout the hotel are placed beautiful Asian antiques and artwork, and this theme was continued in our bedroom.
The breakfast room was nice, again with views of the gardens. The English breakfast was ok, not the best we’ve had but also not the worst! There were lovely little individual jars of Bonne Maman jam, honey and marmalade on some of the tables but not all (ditto jugs of milk), as we went down near the end of the breakfast serving time (9:15am!) perhaps they were too busy to replenish. There was also a lounge/ bar that apparently served until about 11pm but we didn’t utilise this.
The lady that checked us in (Audrey) was wonderful, really friendly, and gave us lots of maps, showing us how to walk into town (really close) and recommending restaurants etc. The lady that checked us out in the morning was also kind enough to let us leave our car in their car park while we went into Bath for a couple of hours to visit the Roman Baths which were fantastic.
Lovely hotel, beautiful decor and fantastic location in the centre of Bath, bit pricey but then apparently Bath is a very expensive city.

“Lovely Hotel - Not sure about 5 star rating”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

This is a really elegant Georgian property, set in a prime location, literally 5 mins from Bath city centre. The interior is classy and retains many period features. The reception staff are excellent, as are the ladies serving at breakfast. On the subject of breakfast, this was very nicley cooked and crucially the poached eggs were perfect! Our room was on the basement floor and was quite modern, but still had the lovely period fireplace intact. The bed was very comfortable, and everything was clean as you'd expect. I was a little disappointed to find there was no bath though, considering the rating of the hotel. I've noticed from the other reviews that people are questioning the hotel's 5 star rating and rightly so. This is without doubt a very well run guest house/bed and breakfast. It doesn't have anywhere near the level of facilities to be awarded 5 stars and in reality they should be charging around £90 per night for two persons.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a bath!

“This is not a 5 star hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2011

The only good thing about this hotel is its location , reception staff Michael and the good cooked breakfast.
The decor is not just tired its exhausted and its in dire need of a good deep clean and a refurbishment .If you must visit this establishment (it would be lucky to get three stars ) check the sheets and towels, as when we arrived , after 5pm, we were shown to the room we had booked and it hadn't been cleaned from the last person ! yuk

Room Tip: Do not choose the ZEN or Empire

“Pleasant Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2011

Our room was clean and a good size so we were able to live out of our suitcases (2 large). Yes it is on a main road and I am a light sleeper so closed the window. This might be an issue in summer but we were fine in early September. The bathroom was a good size and there were large towels with handwash, shower gel and shampoo provided.

Hannah at reception was friendly and helpful. Provided maps and brochures for Bath with eating places marked. We needed extra pillows and this was no problem. A bonus was a pick up laundry service (bag of laundry for £12). There was a safe but as in most places like this in the UK, no lift.

Breakfast was good and the staff were friendly. We stayed 2 nights and enjoyed our stay.

Easy walk to restaurants. Try the Jane Austen Centre for a fantastic afternoon tea (great for lunch) in pretty surroundings (further away near the Assembly Rooms).

Room Tip: Siena is a good room and is on the 1st floor. It is at the front of the house near the road though.
