“Some good points, some... could be better.”

On arrival at Pratt's hotel it looked very promising. The walk from the station was very short and from the map I could see that it would be an equally short walk to the Forum for the concert that evening. A friendly welcome at reception, and I was given a room on the first floor, which was really helpful. The room was spacious, and the very generous supplies of free toiletries a pleasant extra. Coffee and milk supplies were equally generous. Okay, the carpets were old and stained, but I wasn't planning on sitting/lying on the carpet, so that wasn't an issue with me. I was also impressed by the safety chain on the door. Excellent so far.
The first problem happened when I handed my key over to reception before I went out, on their request. I do prefer to take my key with me, and this time I really wished I had. When I returned - at around 11pm, reception wasn't manned, and there were two of us waiting for our keys. It turned out the porter was serving in the bar. Okay, I know it's not easy to multi-task but wouldn't it have been better to have an extra member of staff to serve in the bar? A hotel really should have 24 hour reception, unless stated otherwise. I ended up having to go to the bar and ask if the people waiting at reception could have their keys. It was well past midnight when I went to bed and this led to a major problem next morning. I'd booked a call for 7.30 and when I heard the phone, got out of bed and went off to the bathroom, not thinking to check the clock. The biggest disappointment then occurred... there was no safety rail at the back of the bath, which was quite high off the ground. I have balance problems, and realised that if I managed to get into the bath to get my shower, that I'd not get out safely - the little rail on the side of the bath just didn't feel safe enough. So, already disappointed because of not being able to shower - I love my showers! - I had a makeshift wash at the sink, and went to get dressed. Then I looked at the clock. It was only quarter past six! I was not happy, although I did get a very nice apology when I phoned to complain. As I hadn't ordered room service breakfast till 8.30, I had to have a snooze in the chair instead. Breakfast arrived.... now that was excellent, and at only £3 for the room service, affordable.
It's a shame that I couldn't praise this hotel 100% because the good bits were really good. But the things that didn't go right did actually spoil the stay for me a little. How about investing in more staff and some walk-in showers, guys? That way Pratts would be an outstanding place to stay. Thanks for reading.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a lower floor if you have any kind of walking difficulties or don't like lifts...

Dear Tanith Panic

Thank you for your review on Trip advisor, It is much appreciated when our guests give us feedback on their stay. Firstly I am glad you found the staff here to be friendly and welcoming. I can only apologise that their was no one to give you your key when you arrived back in the evening, We ask guests to leave their keys behind reception in case of emergencies so we know who is in the Hotel. I have asked our maintenance team to address the issue you raise with the shower in your room and have spoken to the reception team with regards to the mistake on your early morning call, They are deeply sorry for this mistake. On a positive note I am glad you enjoyed your breakfast and hope you decide to stay with us again.

Kindest Regards

“Great Hotel - Don't listen to the bad reviews!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

Firstly, after booking this hotel I read some of the reivews - I know wrong way around! But I'm glad I did. I will agree that parts of the hotel are dated but I think this just adds to its charm. Right from the moment my daughter and I arrived we were made to feel welcome, safe and comfortable. This was important to me as this was the first time we had travelled without my husband and son. Our room was very clean, warm and comfortable and yes it did have a few bumps and bruises but let's be realistic here, the rates were not astronomical and for the hundreds of thousands of visitors to Bath what can you really expect of some of the less expensive hotels. If, like us, you were out most of the day shopping and sightseeing then the hotel was more than adequate. The staff are friendly and helpful and the breakfast each morning was just what we needed to set us up for a busy day sightseeing. If I had to make a complaint about the hotel it would be about the windows!! Our room was at the front of the hotel and on the Saturday night you could hear all the revellers just outside at the Taxi rank, I had got up out of bed to check that the window wasn't open but I realised that it was just because its the original windows and you can just about hear everything. The hotel itself, despite being at full occupancy, was very quiet and we could hear nothing from the other rooms beside or above us. All in all I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a pleasant place to lay their heads - anyone who wants to go to Bath and stay in their hotel all day and night might need to "take the waters"!!

Room Tip: Rooms at the front are a bit noisier due to the taxi rank and Halcyon hotel at the corner

“faded, individual and in a great position”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

Had a really good deal with Saga-no single supplement. Read reviews here and requested rooms with good water pressure-no problem there. We had lovely big rooms, extremely clean, the staff were excellent and the food very good. Yes it needs refurbishing-although the public rooms were very nice. It would doubtless have been a lot more expensive with new furniture and decoration. Our only reservation was the parlous state of the wardrobes-but staff immediately mended the one where the door fell off. We would certainly go again but if you want immaculate modern rooms then this hotel is probably not for you

Room Tip: Tell them what you want. We noticed that they would happily show you which rooms were available. Loo...

“Overpriced backpackers”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

Very poor welcome from staff, felt like a bad backpackers. Were barely acknowledged. Public areas were stewn with towels on the floor and stairway - very dirty common areas. Poor maintenance in the room, small broken missing pieces, etc. The heating in the room was almost unbearable and could not be turned down. Too expensive for the level of accommodation - paid £130. Will not be recommending or returning. Stay clear!

Thank you for your comments with regards to your stay here at Pratt's Hotel. It was very disappointing to hear that you felt your were not looked after here at the hotel, We often get very good reviews about our customer care and are sorry we did not meet this standard with yourselves. I have asked housekeeping and maintenace to review each room with regards to small broken missing pieces to ensure this does not occur again. During your stay the heating had just been started for the winter and we were trying to get the hotel to an acceptable level. I am sorry this caused you discomfort.

Kindest regards

“Smashing Staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

The biggest asset to this hotel are the staff, who have a lot to put up with at this tired and worn out hotel. Whilst the public areas are passable, the bedrooms and bathrooms leave a lot to be desired, peeling wall paper, badly stained ceilings, archaic bathrooms with taps that barely work.
The hotel is very central and offers the traveller easy access to many of Bath's historic attractions, but the hotel does not offer value for money in its current state and we heard many complaints whilst staying at the hotel, which must be constantly demoralising for the staff. We could have added to these, but what we already heard was sufficient to say that our observations were not the exception.
Alex Politsi 'The Hotel Inspector' would have a field day and whilst we had an enjoyable stay this tired and worn out hotel which is long overdue a revamp, would not feature in any repeat visit.

Room Tip: From what we saw and heard there are NO good rooms.

Thank you for your review it is much appreciated. I am extremely glad you found the staff here to be an asset and I am sorry the hotel did not meet your expectations with regards to the property being worn and tired. We have just began an extensive refurbishment of the building and do hope you give us a second chance in the future.
