On arrival at Pratt's hotel it looked very promising. The walk from the station was very short and from the map I could see that it would be an equally short walk to the Forum for the concert that evening. A friendly welcome at reception, and I was given a room on the first floor, which was really helpful. The room was spacious, and the very generous supplies of free toiletries a pleasant extra. Coffee and milk supplies were equally generous. Okay, the carpets were old and stained, but I wasn't planning on sitting/lying on the carpet, so that wasn't an issue with me. I was also impressed by the safety chain on the door. Excellent so far.
The first problem happened when I handed my key over to reception before I went out, on their request. I do prefer to take my key with me, and this time I really wished I had. When I returned - at around 11pm, reception wasn't manned, and there were two of us waiting for our keys. It turned out the porter was serving in the bar. Okay, I know it's not easy to multi-task but wouldn't it have been better to have an extra member of staff to serve in the bar? A hotel really should have 24 hour reception, unless stated otherwise. I ended up having to go to the bar and ask if the people waiting at reception could have their keys. It was well past midnight when I went to bed and this led to a major problem next morning. I'd booked a call for 7.30 and when I heard the phone, got out of bed and went off to the bathroom, not thinking to check the clock. The biggest disappointment then occurred... there was no safety rail at the back of the bath, which was quite high off the ground. I have balance problems, and realised that if I managed to get into the bath to get my shower, that I'd not get out safely - the little rail on the side of the bath just didn't feel safe enough. So, already disappointed because of not being able to shower - I love my showers! - I had a makeshift wash at the sink, and went to get dressed. Then I looked at the clock. It was only quarter past six! I was not happy, although I did get a very nice apology when I phoned to complain. As I hadn't ordered room service breakfast till 8.30, I had to have a snooze in the chair instead. Breakfast arrived.... now that was excellent, and at only £3 for the room service, affordable.
It's a shame that I couldn't praise this hotel 100% because the good bits were really good. But the things that didn't go right did actually spoil the stay for me a little. How about investing in more staff and some walk-in showers, guys? That way Pratts would be an outstanding place to stay. Thanks for reading.
