I read somewhere that this is a 5 star hotel (which it should be for the price), but this would fall short of 5 (and possibly 4 stars) in London, although the staff do try really hard.
Positives:
- Great location, amazing view over Bath and steeped in character and history
- Front desk staff, concierge - a great welcome as you come in, will take care of car and luggage, very professional and stress free - you are made to feel very special
- The rooms are full of character and it doesn't feel like "yet another chain hotel"
- Only had sandwiches in the restaurant but they were excellent
- Very comfortable beds (although zipped in middle rather than double), high quality sheets and bedding, all spotlessly clean
Negatives:
- The room we were in just felt faded and a bit tired, maybe we were unlucky but 1st thing that greeted us was a massive stain on the carpet, tiles at back of toilet were chipped, there was a loose floor tile that my wife stubbed her toe on, the towel rail was loose. Little things like this made the room feel a bit "dirty" even though it was clearly cleaned properly - just not good enough in a Hotel that plays at this price point.
- Service was a bit iffy in the bar, shame as front of house are excellent
In summary they try very hard, but are let down I think by not paying enough attention (or spending enough!) on basic repairs and re-furb.
I dont like faceless chain hotels and normally go for character, history and individuality but stains, loose fittings and cracked tiles just aren't good enough at these prices.
Almost gave 3 stars because of this but went for 4 as the staff are so helpful and friendly!
