“Lots of positives, but a bit tired....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I read somewhere that this is a 5 star hotel (which it should be for the price), but this would fall short of 5 (and possibly 4 stars) in London, although the staff do try really hard.
Positives:
- Great location, amazing view over Bath and steeped in character and history
- Front desk staff, concierge - a great welcome as you come in, will take care of car and luggage, very professional and stress free - you are made to feel very special
- The rooms are full of character and it doesn't feel like "yet another chain hotel"
- Only had sandwiches in the restaurant but they were excellent
- Very comfortable beds (although zipped in middle rather than double), high quality sheets and bedding, all spotlessly clean
Negatives:
- The room we were in just felt faded and a bit tired, maybe we were unlucky but 1st thing that greeted us was a massive stain on the carpet, tiles at back of toilet were chipped, there was a loose floor tile that my wife stubbed her toe on, the towel rail was loose. Little things like this made the room feel a bit "dirty" even though it was clearly cleaned properly - just not good enough in a Hotel that plays at this price point.
- Service was a bit iffy in the bar, shame as front of house are excellent
In summary they try very hard, but are let down I think by not paying enough attention (or spending enough!) on basic repairs and re-furb.
I dont like faceless chain hotels and normally go for character, history and individuality but stains, loose fittings and cracked tiles just aren't good enough at these prices.
Almost gave 3 stars because of this but went for 4 as the staff are so helpful and friendly!

“Christmas class!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Stayed over Christmas in the Duke of York suite and had a flawless and amazing time. The room itself is incredible but the service was impeccable. The bath house was home most of the stay and dinner and cocktails were lovely. Highly recommended.

“Fell short of expectations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Stayed for one night in room 12. The room was tired with missing grouting in the bathroom. The bed was a zip up double Nd although a quality comfortable bed and I am sure great as two singles the bed slopped towards the zip making it somewhat uncomfortable. My main issue however was that the purpose of our stay was to go to the theatre. As we did not want to eat before the performance I asked two different members of staff if there was a late night menu available. On both occassions I was assured there would be a selection of hot and cold food available post 10pm. On arriving back to the hotel at about 10.15 we proceeded straight to the bar. We immediately asked for the menu that was available at this time. we were then told by a seemingly unhappy waiter that he woul have to check as he was not sure any food was possible. When he returned he said all that was available was sandwiches and only cold or mushroom soup. His attitude was poor and for this standard of hotel I was disappointed. We did tell caption on checking out and she said she would mention it to the manager. Service from all front of house staff was top notch but in the Dower House left a lot to be desired.

“Great welcome - pity about the dinner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Our stay was the Christmas package. The hotel must be very difficult to run, with the reception and lounge on one side of the back garden, and the restaurant on the other. The staff do a great job despite these odds, and service was excellent. Breakfast and afternoon tea were good, but dinner was the chef's reinterpretation of the traditional Christmas meal as nouvelle cuisine. It was frankly bizarre: highlights were the inch-thick turkey roll, and the plate of five minute dessert items.

“Expensive Classy Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Hotel is located about a 20 minute easy walk through the town centre from the train station. It has by far and away the best location in Bath. We checked in before the room was ready but was shown through to the drawing room for tea and coffee and taken around the hotel facilities before then going to the room. The buildings are amazing and steeped in history. The spa was OK but busy. The main pool was full of people on a friday afternoon a bit strangely. We stayed in a standard double room which felt like going to your own house every evening - very cosy and no noise from other rooms at all. It wasn't in the main building but it was rather nice having your own private section. Leaving the section to go to breakfast was tricky given that it was snowing but it all added to the romance. Breakfast was excellent and was included in our room tarriff (booked directly with the hotel). We didn't try the restaurant but it looked superb and relatively good value for money given the type of food being served. Perfect hotel for a quiet get away weekend for a special treat.

Room Tip: The standard rooms don't feel like standard rooms - they feel more like luxury!
