“Cracking, Atmospheric, Romantic Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

A genuine coaching inn situated in the centre of historic Shrewsbury with its mediaeval houses and narrow shuts that is full of character. Staff were a bit grumpy on arrival, but the room was really clean and cosy. The hotel only has three stars, but this is probably because they don't have ironing boards, superfast broadband and fluffy slippers. Don't let this put you off because it really is a great little place. There is a revolving door, a cute little public bar, (serving locally brewed beer), and a bona fide 'great hall' with cavernous fireplace replete with crackling log fire and comfy chairs. Lots of wood panelling and plush carpets. Great food, with a choice of cooked breakfasts and continental. Vegetarians and other deviants are accommodated as well. The hotel has its own garage, with street entrance and most ofit is under cover. Highly recommended for a romantic getaway. While we were there a very formal gourment dining night was being run, replete with a great looking food and drinks bill and some very nicely turned out ladies and gentlemen in gowns and dinner suits.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter and even though in a modern (1920s) extension, are kitted out in the s...

“Sunday lunch”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Looked a nice place on the internet and a grade 1 listed bilding and some history should be worth trying for sunday lunch we thought. Sadly like so many restaurants/hotels no welcome when you arrive and walking up and down reception looking for the washroom wont illicit a response from reception. The fact is no one seems interested if you are there or not.
Restaurant is a lovely setting and menu looked good, soup was delicious ( we had to send it back it was only warm) Both the beef and pork weres fine if meagre helpings and the vegetables were non existent for two people. Pudds were ok my bread and butter pudding looked more like a piece of warmed upsponge with no fruit or crispy topping. We had a bottle of wine for £16 paid our bill of £60 for two including tip and left. No one asked whether we had enjoyed our meal, would we come again....we almost felt that no one had noticed we had been there at all. What a pity that the Lion has so much going for it yet you get that feeling that no one really cares.

“Plenty of Character. Relaxing stay.”

Found the Hotel with no problems. On-site parking - Free and Secure - a good start!! Check-in, smooth and efficient. We stayed in Room 205 at the front of the Hotel. Room was spacious and comfortable - well decorated and spotlessly clean.
Usual tariff at £110 per night B&B was a bit steep in my opinion. We were attending a music event at the Hotel, organised by a friend, & got a welcome discount on the usual B&B rate. The nights entertainment - ably provided by Tiger Lilly supported by Craig Sheridan - both well worth a listen!
Breakfast was Good. Went for the the Full-English option (of course!!). Waitress took order & Toast and Coffee quickly arrived before the Bacon & Eggs etc. etc. YUM.
The Lion is ideally located in central Shrewsbury. A few Pubs & Restaurants all easily within walking distance.
Lovely old building with plenty of character. Open fires and creaky floorboards - lots of nooks and crannies to explore !!
Would certainly stay at The Lion again. Staff were helpful & attentive throughout our stay.
Thank-you for a relaxing time.

Room Tip: Tanners - Wine Merchants are just down the hill. Great selection of Wines.

Friday night meal in the restaurant was an truly memorable event, good menu, excellent service with very helpful and friendly staff. Happily recommend to anyone wanting an enjoyable food experience. Past bar lunches with friends have also been excellent.

“Christmas Eve Afternoon Tea with family....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Having booked afternoon tea at the Lion Hotel for out festive family get to together we were left disappointed. The venue is lovely with open fires and relaxing chairs, having a lounge area to ourselves was great but this room suggested no notion of it being christmas. Our percieved festive indulgencies were spoiled by the way we were served and the quality of the food. I had expected tea served in pots and fresh cake to tempt us, but we had flasks of hot water tea bags on strings and cake that no fork would cut through moulded together with cream. Our afternoon treat was served in the main reception area by the reception desk and cost far more than the agreed amount. The gents were disppointed that the real ale had ran out, my glass of mulled wine having the sediment of the bottom of the bottle. I must say the staff were excellant in clearly trying to manage a busy time without proper resources.Such a shame the standard of food is letting down a very promising enviroment.
