“Extremely poor welcome - we didn't get one on arriving to eat. Staff on the bar as miserable as sin!”

We went to eat at the Fox House given its not too far from where we live. We decided to go there rather than other local pubs for Sunday lunch. We arrived at 12:30 and as requeste by a sign "waited to be seated" we must have been waiting well over 5 minutes and a all the staff looked at us not one of them greeted or acknowledge us. Eventually we were told that we'd have to wait for a table by a very stern and unhappy chap who appeared to be the manager - like him all the staff at the bar were equally as pleasant ie they were not. It was like walking into a funeral the atmosphere was so poor.

Went to the toilet which were dirty and very, very smelly. Given we were there so soon after opening they need to sack the cleaner or invest in some bleach!

The area where we'd been asked to wait was tiny and could not cope with the amount of people waiting to eat, yet when we eventually we shown to our table 25 minutes later, there were many tables empty and which we're not reserved so why we were asked to wait in the bar area was beyond me.

The food was okay - nothing spectacular but adequate.

Our waitress was pleasant (Lucy) certainly in comparison to the others.

Overall the staff need to understand they work in the service industry and need to know how to engage with customers in a prodessional and happy manner or go and work in a funeral directors where they are more suited given their current dispositions.

“1st room awful (mouse droppings!), 2nd not bad, meal very nice!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

Me and my fiancé arrived in December for a nights stay. We entered and were greeted in a friendly manner. We were given keys and pointed (kind of) to the room. We scanned in to our block and then opened our door which stepped down into the main room. The bathroom was just as you walked in.
It appeared OK but was very cold. There was an additional heater and the radiator didn't seem to work. There was 3 flies flying about in the bathroom however it looked fairly clean.
Then the bad part- just outside the bathroom was a little hidden bit of floor next to the stairs. It had weird flies that we're alive but none responsive to me trying to waft them on. Also there were MOUSE DROPPINGS! Luckily we didn't see any mice. Anyway we complained and got another upstairs room that was nicer.
However the toilet needed cleaning and we had to go down to reception 3 times about the radiator!

The good bit was the meal. It was very tasty but very expensive!
The included breakfast was nice with cereal, toast, yoghurt, etc.

All in all for 39 pounds plus meal. A decent price.

“Friendly, comfortable hotel with good food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

We arrived on new years day and there was a power cut, so the tables had candles on them. The staff made us very welcome and we spent the evening with some new friends and shared drinks and pizzas, in front of the log fire, as the kitchen had to close. After a comfortable night we went walking on the moors opposite and worked up an appetite for a lovely evening meal. I recommend the calves liver. This is a quirky little place with friendly staff. We will definately return.

“Beautiful meal in a great location.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011 via mobile

We were very happy with a delicious meal with lovely flavours. I had lamb shank and it was the best I have tasted in a long time. With a fresh and perfectly balanced vegetables on the side. I would recommend this establishment.

“Must try harder...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

We have been to this pub a couple of times and have found the menu adventurous and interesting, and the food delicious. However, on our last visit we decided to take advantage of the steak night offering, 2 meals and a bottle of wine for £29.95.

When we walked in, as on other occasions, all staff seemed to be rushed off their feet, and as such, not exactly warm and inviting. We were greeted and told to find a table, which we did (after a couple of changes of mind). There are plenty of choices in the labrynthine eating area, and we chose well. When we sat, the menus were on the table, although there was no indication of the choice of steaks. We sat, got comfortable, and then upon realising how busy the staff were, and consultation with fellow diners (!), decided to order at the bar. I walked back around and ordered drinks and, after being told of the choices, a sirloin and a mixed grill. We were informed of a 40 minute wait, due to a party of 11 just having ordered, but were happy to wait. When the food arrived, quite promptly considering, it was good, but not of the standard we had grown accustomed to. My steak on the mixed grill was overdone, having asked for it rare it was closer to medium. No other major issues with the food, but previous visits had set the standard high unfortunately, and the standard was not met.

Overall, we were disappointed, which is sad because we love the decor, the building and, usually when you can get them to stop and chat for a minute, the staff.
