We decided to book in for lunch here after reading non too favourable reviews about the restaurant at our own hotel. I emailed ahead to ask for the menu and was surprised to discover it was £10 for 2 courses or £13.95 for three courses which sounded like it was great value.
We arrived at 12pm and were sent through to the bar. After about 15 minutes we were asked if our reservation was at 1pm and we told them that it was in fact 12pm. We were given menus and our order was taken in the bar. We were eventually shown to our table at 12.25pm. It would have been better if we were shown straight to the table, especially as we were the only people in the restaurant for the whole meal!
We were given a pre starter of breads, olives and a mint oil dip. I ordered the soup of the day for a starter and my husband had the deep fried goats cheese balls. Both were perfectly sized portions and quite delicious. For mains we ordered fish cake and chips and cottage pie. My fish cake was one large battered fish cake with a layer of fish and a layer of potato inside. I would have preferred two smaller fish cakes, with the fish and potato mashed as it wouldn’t have fallen apart so easily, but it was still good. My husbands cottage pie looked tiny but it was deceptively deep and full of flavour. For dessert, we both decided on chocolate fondue with fruit kebabs, macaroons, marshmallows and brownies. I have to say, this was the star of the show for me – simple but lovely.
We were presented with a bill with a 10% service charge included which was fine, however, we were charged around £16pp for the meal, which we knew was over the odds in comparison with the amount on the menu. This was changed for us on request. On the whole, a great lunch and excellent value – I would thoroughly recommend it.
