“Food review only - very good!”

We decided to book in for lunch here after reading non too favourable reviews about the restaurant at our own hotel. I emailed ahead to ask for the menu and was surprised to discover it was £10 for 2 courses or £13.95 for three courses which sounded like it was great value.

We arrived at 12pm and were sent through to the bar. After about 15 minutes we were asked if our reservation was at 1pm and we told them that it was in fact 12pm. We were given menus and our order was taken in the bar. We were eventually shown to our table at 12.25pm. It would have been better if we were shown straight to the table, especially as we were the only people in the restaurant for the whole meal!

We were given a pre starter of breads, olives and a mint oil dip. I ordered the soup of the day for a starter and my husband had the deep fried goats cheese balls. Both were perfectly sized portions and quite delicious. For mains we ordered fish cake and chips and cottage pie. My fish cake was one large battered fish cake with a layer of fish and a layer of potato inside. I would have preferred two smaller fish cakes, with the fish and potato mashed as it wouldn’t have fallen apart so easily, but it was still good. My husbands cottage pie looked tiny but it was deceptively deep and full of flavour. For dessert, we both decided on chocolate fondue with fruit kebabs, macaroons, marshmallows and brownies. I have to say, this was the star of the show for me – simple but lovely.

We were presented with a bill with a 10% service charge included which was fine, however, we were charged around £16pp for the meal, which we knew was over the odds in comparison with the amount on the menu. This was changed for us on request. On the whole, a great lunch and excellent value – I would thoroughly recommend it.

“Almost excellent and highly recommended”

Excellent huge, quiet room (Empire Knife) very good food let down by some silly staff issues.
The building is indeed very impressive and very close to the M1 motorway without any apparent noise and bedrooms have high ceilings and fine fittings. The rooms are named after Aston-Martin car models or cutlery types in case you wonder. Strange little niggles like not having a mirror near a plug for drying ones' hair. The only one was clearly placed for 7 foot tall basketball players. My wife stood on a chair! On arrival the receptionist initially said she couldn't find our booking, although it was there all the time. When she found it she didn't dream of apologising and made it seem like it was almost our fault! When the wrong newspaper arrived the next morning and I pointed that out, she sat looking at it as if the Express would magically transform into the Telegraph! In fairness she did seem to be working very long hours. We had the Early-Bird dinner on arrival and it was extremely tasty, very well presented and very good value. No attempt to rush you from the table either. Overall I would recommend it but take your sense of humour and look for a discount.

Room Tip: Only take the Darcy rooms if you like church bells. Rooms in the original house are wonderfully quie...

“Not as happy as previous occasions”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We have stayed at Aston Hall on 4 occasions. This time we had a few niggly problems. Our booking had been messed up but they rectified it and immediately offered a discounted rate. The manager was lovely. Most of the reception staff are very good.... but, compared to the wramth and friendly we received on our first stay, it just doesn't reach that level. We asked for a late dinner but said that they couldn't do it - but then offered us a special sandwich selection instead. It turned out to be a real treat. Breakfast during the week was good. Everything was available but croissants were very old and hard. The weekend breakfast was a bit Faulty Towersish - Saturday they had a full selection but ended the cooked breakfasts early. Sunday they said they didn't start breakfast until 9am, but told me they don't do pancakes after 9 am on a weekend - except on a Saturday before 9 am. So I assume, they only do breakfast between 9-10 and don't do pancakes. Then they make it obvious that they want to get you out of the dining room by 10:20 and shake the tableclothes out (hitting heads and sending crumbs flying) while we are trying to sit having a leisurely breakfast. So, forget a leaisurely breakfast! The rooms are mostly great - only this last time did we have a sub-par room. The luxury rooms are huge, modern and good bathrooms. Beds are very comfy. Our shower was leaky and had mould - first time I have seen this but we had a smaller room, probably because they were showing off their bigger rooms to prospective wedding parties that weekend and therefore kept their better rooms to show off. Good location, so close to the M1. We went to the Figure Skating championships at Motorpoint arena and it took us less than 15 minutes to get back to the hotel. Very convenient. Just bring back that Yorkshire warmth and friendliness to all the staff!

Room Tip: Ask for a spacious room facing the rear gardens - less noise from early leavers

“Very nice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

Had to find somewhere in the area for an overnight stay at very short notice so booked purely for the location and the price.
It was a huge surprise when we arrived to find such an impressive building set in well maintained grounds. I wish we had came under different circumstances as it would of been nice to take in what looked like quite a substantial area where we might have been able to enjoy a stroll. Wouldn't of minded the chance to look around the rest of the hotel too as it all looked good. Room was nice, clean and fresh. Staff were extremely polite and helpful.
Only disappointment was the bed was that comfy we slept in and were running late so had to miss breakfast :]

I would definitely return only not so much "in sleep then out again"
