“Clean, convenient and handy.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 March 2011

We recently returned from a pleasant stay we had in Pat's cottage. Both my wife and 3 young children were delighted with this accomodation. The cottage has very low ceiling with beams exposed, narrow and low doorways and steep staircases which all add character to the place.

The property comprises of two bedrooms, a kitchen/dinette, shower room and lounge. We were informed that we could use next-door’s outdoor solar heated swimming pool but not a good idea during the cold temperatures of March so we gave it a miss. Using nextdoors swimming pool should not be a problem as they are the owners of the cottage.

The kitchen is quite small but we were more that capable of cooking and serving meals to our family. The kitchen has all what you would expect including a gas hob/electric oven and a washing machine.

The lounge is very comfortable with two leather chesterfield seats that add to the comfort. The TV only has access to free view channels which was more than adequate for ourselves. There is also a reasonable selection of DVDs.

The master bedroom is again quite small but very cosy. We found this room was more than adequate for storage. The heaters give good heat out and we never felt cold.

The attic bedroom is very small but suited my children, who loved it. The bedroom is access via a small door/large hatch. I had to crouch down and walk backwards to exit. This bedroom, like the rest of the house was old, charming and full of character. Avoid ghost stories to young children in this room as the ambiance makes them more believable.

The shower room comprises of a double shower and toilet. If you are a tall person be prepared to crouch down when showering.

We found the cottage exactly what we were expecting. The place is full of character and very comfortable. Some people may find the size as a hindrance but we felt it added to our stay.

The location of the cottage is fine with easy access to local bus route and close to the Peak District. Near to convinience strore, pubs and restaurants.

There is an off road parking spot for one car and this proved to be a tight squeeze that needed getting used to.

The most important thing about places I stay are that they are clean. We found this place very clean, including the beds and bedding, kitchen and just about everywhere.

All in all, a very clean home that is small and compact which is supported with a friendly proprietor who appears easygoing and very approachable.

“Good for small people!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 February 2008

The cottage is a very old building with VERY low ceilings. The stairs are narrow with a ceiling so low that I had to half crawl up and down - I am 5'8". The door to the upper bedroom (which is really a converted storage attic) is literally about 4 feet high - not really a door. At no point in this bedroom could I stand up straight. The same was true of the bathroom where my head touched the shower ceiling! My son, who is very tall, had real problems. He had to kneel to brush his teeth.
The master bedroom is better - still low ceiling in parts but nowhere near as bad as the second bedroom.
Kitchen - well equipped
Lounge - tv very poor, couches uncomfortable
The cottage is advertised as sleeping 5 or 6 people (can't remember which), there were 3 of us and it seemed very crowded.
This cottage would be fine for a couple, but not for any larger party.
Everything was clean, the owner was pleasant enough and the location is good. Pubs, restaurants, shops and a bus stop are all a short walk away.
The cottage was expensive for what we got.

  • Liked — Location was pretty good
  • Disliked — Standard of furniture and height of ceilings
