“OK - Not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

I stayed at the Rutland for one night on business. The check-in was OK and on first impressions the room was fine and nicely decorated. But a number of problems....Although it was sub zero outside, the room was stiffling hot. The heating was on full blast - the problem was that the heating was so noisey, it had to be switched off and because there was no double glazing the room only the original sash windows soon got cold and this was made worse by only having a sheet and a blanket - not a douvet. The on-suite was down a small set of stairs and the bathroom was bitter cold - the single towel rail heater had no effect. Also the toilet was crammed into a corner one had to sit on "side saddle"! The other big problem was the noise from the student population shouting and screaming as the passed the hotel in the early hours. And finally, the mattress was one of these memory foam things which are sooo uncomfortable. I did not use the restaurant or have breakfast. There are many very interesting restaurants and bars withing a short distance - I found a Turkish grill Eefes Bar which was great.

Room Tip: Perhaps a room away from the road would be quieter

“hospital handy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We stayed at the Rutland while my partner attended the Hallamshire hospital for treatment. We were presently suprised with the hotel and its facilities. Very clean and tastefully decorated our bedroom had full length picture above bed and was clean and smelt fresh.Food was very good with a nice mixed menu. The hotel staff were very helpful and the hotel cleaners wre polite and curtious. Will be back again this summer and would definetly recommend this hotel

Room Tip: Higher rooms are harder to get to but well worth it.

“A great night's sleep!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

It was the second time we had stayed at the Rutland because of it's close proximatey to Sheffield uni and very handy for graduation days. Although the staircases are quite steep and we couldn't find a lift we had a very comfortable stay. The staff were very friendly and the breakfast super. We would definitely stay again.

“Good hotel, slightly out of the way”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

This was a stopover on new years' eve and we picked it for its location close to where we were going to visit friends. The rate was ok for NYE (£70 room only) and there seemed to plently of parking. The layout of the hotel was pretty odd, and seemed to consist of lots of buildings joined together. It looked to have been done up fairly recently, and the look was sort of retro with exposed brick and wooden slats on the walls that gave it a 70s sauna feel. Strangely it works! The bathroom was really nice, very modern and clean. The room was a fairly decent size and had a flat screen tv, tea and coffee, and I think they had wifi available. The staff were helpful and friendly too. The only downside (although not a problem for us) is that it's not particularly close to town. It's up near the uni and the royal hallamshire hospital, but probably 20/30 mins walk from the centre. A good hotel and perfect for what we needed but you might want to shop around if you're planning to spend lots of time in the city centre.

“Christmas event at the Rutland”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2011

Just attended a Christmas dinner here with a group of about 30 people. The dining room is quite small, as the hotel itself is a group of converted Victorian houses, we were in an annexe dining room/conservatory extension which was quite pleasant. Though it was a Christmas event, they didn't bother piping music through to our room from the dance floor which was in the next room. The staff were pleasant and the food on the good side of acceptable, though not earth-shattering, the starters and puddings were obviously bought in from a wholesaler. The main course was good, nicely cooked, generous portions, but the roasted root vegetables with it were not quite cooked through, and were very hard. Service was quite slow and stuff like pulled crackers and dirty glasses were not cleared between courses, so the tables got very cluttered and messy. We didn't stay overnight, so no idea what the rooms are like. This hotel is so handy for the hospitals and university it should be a goldmine, but it has a slightly average feel about it.
