We booked this accommodation for the weekend of the Reading Festival. it was booked through laterooms.com back in September 2010. However, on arrival, it transpired that our room had been booked to someone else. Initially there was a suggestion from the owner that our booking had been cancelled a few days before, but that was definitely not the case and indeed, our booking was showing on his computer screen.
The owner and his associate from the hotel next door concluded that it was human error, and that it was just one of those things. We responded that human error or not, we needed somewhere to stay for the next three nights, as that was what we had booked with them (there were four of us and we were aware that the festival weekend is very very busy). The staff at the hotel managed to find us a hotel for that night only (Friday) out on the edge of town. We were content to accept that offer, but we asked them to please keep ringing round to try and get somewhere for the other nights too. We were very concerned when they responded that, whilst they would try, it was not really their responsibility as we no longer had a booking with them now that they had refunded our money. This did not seem right to us at all.
We waited outside in the meantime - incidentally, the hotel is in a fairly run-down area of Reading - for a cab to our replacement hotel for that night; we had asked for them to meet the cost of the cab as it was because of their error. After some delay the cab arrived and the driver said he was unaware of any arrangement, so we had to go back in and get the owner of the hotel to come out and he paid the driver.
We needed to get our arrangements sorted for the rest of the weekend so we could get on and enjoy the festival so, as we were driving along, we did what we probably should have done at the start and phoned laterooms. They were incredibly helpful and supportive, and confirmed our view that it was the responsibility of the Crown Lodge to help us out. The laterooms operator called up Crown Lodge on our behalf to try and get something sorted out. She then called us back to tell us that the owner had been really unhelpful and unco-operative, and she was not impressed. She searched the laterrooms listings for Reading and made arrangements for alternative accommodation for us there and then over the phone; very helpful.
We never heard anything more from Crown Lodge, even though I had left my number with them and was expecting them to get in touch to see about accommodation for the remianing nights. Thanks to laterooms this didn't matter.
We have no idea if this was an unusual experience at the Crown Lodge, but whatever the circumstances, they showed very little desire to take responsibility and make up for their booking error. One of our party described their answers as "rehearsed". And we have since read one of the other trip advisor reviews for this hotel describes exactly the same experience as we had. So the conclusion appears to be that either they are fairly incompetent at running a hotel, or they have a policy of deliberating double-booking their rooms for some reason.
