“Fit for our purpose.”

Here we go then ! Yes it needs money spent on it in some places but our room wasnt damp or cold and we didnt have to part with a limb to pay for it.
It all depends i suppose what you go here to do. We just come to relax ,read and generally do very little. Its one hotel we visit where we spend more time in the hotel than out of it. The staff here in our experience are very polite and helpful.
We have visited in all seasons and weathers. On a warm day sitting reading the paper on the balcony is a good thing. On a cold day sitting by the window looking out over the lake is also a good thing.
The room was spacious and clean with a proper wardrobe , mini safe and a fridge. The bed was comfortable and firm and the pillows were ok. The tv is old style with limited channels.
Lighting for the room was good with ample plug sockets. Curtains thick enough to blot the light out completely.
The bathroom was clean with plenty of room. The only downside was the chrome towel rail that had succumbed to rust. It just needs to be binned. We didnt use it. No major issue.
As it snowed we decided to eat our evening meal in the hotel. I think as it wasnt very busy there was some tables set up at the back of the bar. Food was excellent , service was good.
Breakfast in the lakeside restaurant on previous visits was buffet but this time was table service. Plenty of it and all hot and tasty.
We just like it here . On all our visits its been relaxing and peaceful. Someone on here wants activities ! Go to Butlins.
Someone else says the internet is slow. Quite possibly it is, but thats not what we come for.
We didnt pay top dollar for the room and maybe that gives us slightly rose tinted specs but we like it and it serves our purpose. We will return.

“Not the best, very average”

I booked this hotel very last minute. I think they are still trying to live on past reputation somewhat as the signs for the hotel are the Copthorne, this hotel is very very dated and in need of works throughout. That said there wasnt any major issues with my stay.
My room was damp and cold and in need of a drastic up date.
The most annoying part of my stay was the directions to the hotel, I think there has been a road change and its a long way around down what appears to be a bit of a dirt track when arriving late at night. I wouldnt choose to stay at this hotel again as I am sure there must be better ones in the area. The breakfast was not bad at all, service slightly slow but not a problem as they were busy. In my opinion this hotel will not survive without change and modernisation. At best its £50 a night B & B I wouldnt want to pay anymore than that.

“Staff are excellent - hotel is a little dated and tired”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

We stayed at this hotel between Christmas and New Year. The receptionist on arrival was excellent - welcoming and efficient.

The first room we were offered was dismal - very unwelcoming, sparse, cold and badly lit. The carpet was dirty. We were upgraded (free of charge) to a suite, for which we were grateful, and showed good customer service. The suite was a good size, with a sitting room, bedroom and bathroom. It had a double deck outside the bedroom and sitting room overlooking the lake. However, it too, was very sparse, badly lit and had no comfy touches at all - ie no pictures on the walls, no cushions etc. The suite was possibly the most basic we have ever stayed in, and I certainly would not have paid an additional charge for the upgrade. It had an "empty" feeling. The bathroom was a badly designed triangular shape which meant space was limited, which was odd because it adjoined a large hallway ! the fixtures in the bathroom were very dated, the taps etc were badly stained and dull. The bath had a dirty film around it, and the tiles were dirty and had remnants of a previous user's shower gel on them. I required to clean the bath and tiles before we used the facilities.

The bar and restaurant had a nice, relaxed atmosphere, with good food, well cooked, and we enjoyed 2 bar meals there which were very pleasant. The bar staff are attentive and courteous. On the first 2 nights we stayed, the hotel was empty, so lacked atmosphere. Even on New Year's Eve, when the hotel was busier, there was no entertainment laid on and if you wanted to eat in the restaurant, you required to book beforehand, which we were not made aware of earlier, so we eat in the bar again that evening, which was a shame because we would willingly have paid extra for a nice dinner on New Year's Eve, as would others we talked to.

Breakfast was great, made to order, freshly cooked and well presented.

All in all, a nice hotel (but needs updating), good location on the lake, great staff, nice bar food, but the whole place lacks atmosphere and is boring ! I appreciate we stayed during a quiet period, and have no doubt the hotel is buzzing in the summer months with the lake activities available, but I would suggest the Management look at enhancing the public areas and possibly introduce some activities within the hotel, for the quieter months. Not sure we would return to this hotel for these reasons.

“Facilities, food, service good room pretty awful”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

If you get room 120 then ask for another one!
It's very tired, paper pealing off the walls, signs of mould. Bathroom although nice and clean is very dated and mould signs on tile grout etc. it also smells musty as a consequence.

It seems pot luck whether you get a good room at this hotel as others have stayed here and found it fine. We have a corporate account so I would expect better for the price to be honest.

The individual balcony lake view is unique although again spoiled by the old dirty decking. It really wouldn't take that much to make this a great place to stay. I hope the mgt take this on and makes improvements soon.

Food and service excellent, just the room letting down my stay.

Room Tip: Not room 120!
