“Don't Do It”

If you check in and they try & put you in the Lawns Hotel next door - ask for a full refund & walk away! We had gone down for the Reading Festival, so were stuck with this dreadful hotel. The annexe smelt awful, we were give a double bed in a single sized room, the lights did not work & there were lots of cobwebs. We asked to be moved but at 4pm were told the hotel was full, even though we saw several people check in after us to the main hotel! After much compalining we were moved to the main hotel the next day. Rooms here were fine but poor sound insulation and there is no info in the rooms at all & certainly no Welcome message. The manager was very unhelpful & this filtered down through most of the staff. There are loads of other hotels around - use them instead !

Room Tip: Annexe disgusting, Main hotel OK

“Go because it's cheap and don't expect luxury”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2011 via mobile

Stayed for one night on a girls night out. Amazing value for money with full English breakfast included. Staff were all very polite and attentive and it is their smiling faces that make me write this as a positive review. The hotel is tired but tries hard. The bed was comfortable and the shower was amazingly good! On the negative side I found the room a little dirty, the radiator was black and the mirrors needed cleaning. There were some odd stains in the bath and hairs on the floor. I found the room noisy and hot.

“Fantastic value for money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2011

Really enjoyed my stay - felt I got really good value for money.

The hotel was spotlessly clean, & rooms much bigger than most hotels I have stayed at.

Most hotels don't offer such good amenities - the bath was normal size & I could relax after my meeting.

I ordered room service - food was good quality. Staff were friendly & polite.

“Clean & functional but no charisma whatsoever.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2010

Parkside was advertising a special rate of £55 per night inc. breakfast, which, looking at the website, offered good value for money compared with the local Premier Inn/Holiday Inn Express etc.
However, when I rang to confirm they'd recieved my internet booking the gentleman who answered was absolutely adament that breakfast wasn't included, despite the offer being on the website. I printed this off and took it with me.

Upon arrival in the reception area, there was no welcome by the receptionist, just "are you bookiing in?". Having walked in with two bags and a suit carrier, I would have thought that this would have provided her with a reasonable hint, but I felt obliged to answer her before the attack dogs were released.
My room was on the 3rd floor, easily accessible via the lift, was spacious, spotlessly clean and comfortably furnished, with free WiFi.
The bathroom was a bit dated, but everything worked and again, it was spotlessly clean.
My only comment regarding the room would be that, aside from the bible, there was absolutely no literature whatsoever in it, nothing about the hotel services and amenities or the local area. Since the hotel is clearly used by employees of contractors staying for a few days whilst working in the area, as well as others, I would have thought they'd appreciate having such knowledge to hand.
I was woken at 3am by someone whom I assume was leaving to catch an early flight, but I suppose that could happen in any similar hotel.
I had a few drinks and a sandwich in the bar that evening, and whilst I couldn't fault the quality of the food or the prices charged, the staff were equally as charmless as their colleague on the reception area.
My plans for the following day changed and I had to leave before breakfast was served, I also forgot to mention the issue with breakfast prices etc as this would have been £10 extra, not the end of the world but a point of principle.
The gentleman manning the reception desk when I checked out was marginally more polite, at least he did say good morning but when he'd checked that the bill was settled the parting shot was "you can go now". That again lead me to wonder if hired Goons were lurking nearby in case I did actually make a complaint.

Parkside is good value for money and spotlessly clean, but the staff need a serious dose of charm school and instruction in customer service techniques.

“A friendly 3 star hotel easily accessed from Heathrow/Reading Rail Air.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2010

I was undoubtedly concerned when I read reviews on Trip Advisor of the Parkside International - booked by our company.
It was easily accessed from Heathrow via Rail/Air connection to Reading, close to motorway for those arriving by car.
Reception staff were friendly and efficient. The bedroom and en-suite clean and
comfortable - half as big again as a Travel Lodge room. Dinner was reasonably priced and tasty. The night-porter provided breakfast at 0615. My bed was comfy and the room quiet overnight..

Overall, I was pleased and satisfied with my welcome and my stay. I am unable to explain the discrepancy between previous reports and my experience - perhaps customers are looking for a 5* hotel at 3* prices, perhaps it is under new management.. I have scored this hotel on what I would expect from a 3* and to be honest I cannot fault it.
