“Nice location - poor quality food - average rooms in c block”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2010

Setting excellent but hotel in severe need of an update. Bar food and restaurant food very poor, with no finesse and I would think low quality ingredients.

Rooms in the C block are small and standard motel quality with cheap toiletries

So early promise on arrival not delivers on. Try The Hinds Head in the village centre - food is very good indeed

“Wow!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2008

A co-worker and I spent a week here and were put up in two suites that rivaled a floor of my house. The house was a lovely place with beautiful wood work. The breakfast was quite exceptional.

“Nice place, shame about the hotel policies.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 May 2008

We stayed two nights at the manor house for a wedding. The building was old and beautiful, as were the grounds. Staff were friendly and attentive.

My major problem was that the latest time for breakfast was 9.30 and you had to be checked-out by 10am (even on a Sunday!). I thought this was rather early, and took a bit of the shine of the celebrations know that you had be up pretty early the next day if you wish to make breakfast and have time to check out.

“Well and Truly Stuck in the Past”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 February 2008

I had the misfortune to stay at the Manor House while working near Reading. I stayed here a number of times and each time was worse than the one before.

The rooms are old and shabby and if you get put in the "!Courtyard" section you are likely to be put above the sauna which runs between 6am and 10pm and you can hear it constantly. You could also be above the kitchens, again, the extractor fans will keep you awake. Some rooms also have extrnal lights shining into them all night, which coupled with the paper thin curtains is not a pleasurable experience to try and sleep in.

The staff were rude and obnoxious and as I am under 30, I didn't seem to warrant their attention.

One of the worst htels I've ever stayed in.

“Beautiful Old Manor House - Great Service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2007

Build originally in 870, and then re-built after a fire in 1636 - this place is full of history. The staircase and balcony top have wooden carved statues that should be in a museum - beautiful. I was there for a wedding - and the food was great, the service was very attentive and the whole place was clean, organized and very welcoming. Our room was in the center of the house - it had a comfortable, full size bed (not queen), the decorations were a bit old, but they matched the style of the manor. Everything was clean, and not skimped - our bathroom was completely modern with a big shower tub, and all the fixtures were new. We took a 10 minute taxi ride to Aldermaston train station where the trains ran every hour and took us to Reading station - and then back to London - very easy.

  • Liked — Romantic building, and beautiful garden by the lake, very friendly, formal service
  • Disliked — Far out into the country - not sure what else was around us - old furnishings looking a little shabby
