A great disappointment in every way. Although refurbishment was taking place, not one of us (four rooms, on business) were told.

Rooms were cold, shower was cold, breakfast was cold. Upon complaining about the shower I was offered room 20, in another building!.
The road outside noisy, and apart from the aforementioned curry house which we did not try, any other entertainment is a longish walk or taxi into town.

The rooms were supposed to cost 85GBP per night, after all our complaining we paid 50GBP.

Next night we were booked into the Renaissance in Reading. The rooms cost 65GBP and were of the highest standard. 4* hotel with leisure and spa in the centre of town. Hmmmm choices choices.

Having left it to late to book a hotel in Reading (lesson learnt) the only available room was a £95 Executive room at Donnington House. I am not sure how they define executive but a room with 3 single beds a tiny shower and toilet (the sink is in the main room!!) does not count as an executive room to me. This is a very basic hotel however I don’t think £95 is budget! There has been no investment in the hotel, the bed cover were very old, the walls were mouldy and the so tiny & mouldy that I didn’t take a shower in the morning. I did not take breakfast I didn’t want to risk it.
My two big lessons from this visited are, if you are visiting reading book your room at least a week in advance and if you are looking to build a new mid-priced hotel build it in Reading there is definitely demand!

Good choice for a single traveller who needs an affordable place to stay near Reading University. A bit spartan but not bad for a short visit. Decent breakfast. Near to bus stop to go to city, or close enough to walk. Good curry restaurant across the road, supposedly you get a 10% discount if you go there and mention you are staying at donnington.
