“Much improved since I last visited”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

I have stayed at this Travelodge before, and reviewed it, but I feel that I must post another review as this hotel has improved since my last stay.We stayed for 2 nights and all the staff that we met were helpful and cheerful. We asked for more pillows and towels and were given these without question and our room was clean, if basic, with TV with some free view channels, tea & coffee but only four coat hangers and no chair which would be a pain if you had a laptop.
The pub next door 'the world turned upside down' has changed for the better and now does quality food including breakfast at reasonable prices which makes your stay at this hotel complete.

“Dirty and wet”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

We stayed for one night on 24th November 2011 . On arrival there were two lads on reception one being the manager. for both these lads it was their first day in the job. They were both very friendly. The first room that we were given was extremely cold as the heating had been turned off, also the bathroom was filthy with mould all around the tiling. The walls in the room were running with water and even the bed linen was damp. The second room wasn't much better, but at least it was dry and warm. The beds were very uncomfortable, the sheets had seen better days there was only one very thin flat pillow per person. In the bathroom the towels were also very thin and old. There was none of the things that one expects to see such as a hairdryer not even a telephone- so no way to contact reception if say you were taken ill during the night.
We have stayed in various travelodges in the past and always been very satisfied but this place needs pulling down it is in no way up to a standard one should expect.

Room Tip: don't stay there

“Stay somewhere else which is cleaner”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

Chose for its proximity to the University. Arrived late and too tired to complain. Shower was not cleaned properly and I would challenge anyone to have a shower as the temp was so variable even when you think you've set it. The windows were dirty as well as worn. Left early next morning. Reception asked how was my stay. I told them and their reply was "we've had a few maintenance issues" But that doesn't explain the dirt. No chair in our room. As many others have said, not the usual travel lodge standard. Got an automatic feedback afterwards and left lowest scores for all but nothing heard. Do they care ? Try to stay elsewhere if you can. Parking no problem for us. Not often that I take photos but it was SO dirty I felt I had to, to complain.

“Dirty and delapidated!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2011

We booked this Travelodge as we were attending a wedding nearby. On arrival, we were faced with a mountain of dirty laundry next to the reception, then shown to our room- this was filthy! It smelled extremely damp and musty, the windowframes were covered in mould, the bathroom was appalling! We immediately complained and were moved to another room which was an improvement, but definitely not up to a standard you would expect. As we were on a tight schedule, we had to persevere and stay, but if this had been a leisurely break, we would have found alternative accommodation. The reception staff were apologetic and polite and agreed with our opinions of the rooms and said they would convey our findings to the Manager, who was not available during our stay.

“Below the standard expected for a travelodge.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

We booked two rooms for one night at the Whitley Travelodge in Reading. Having stayed in a number of travelodge rooms before and been extremely pleased with the quality and price, we felt that unfortunately this particular travelodge did not meet the same standard.

One room had a wet patch on the floor throughout the duration of the stay. We happened to be leaving at the same time as another couple who had a similar problem in their room. It was also impossible to shower in that room as the water was either scalding hot or very cold. In the end I got out and washed my hair in the sink!! The other room was missing a chair and the toilet was quite stained on arrival despite the cleaners having just left.

The building in general appears quite run down and in need of having a bit of work done to it. There was a smell of damp throughout the reception area and visible damp on the outside of the building.

We managed to secure the rooms on a promotional basis and didn't pay a huge amount for them. It was fine for a place to sleep in for one night but I wouldn't stay any longer or suggest the hotel would be suitable for spending any amount of time in. Unfortunately I think the state of this particular travelodge really lets down the brand down, as there seems to be no interest in its cleanliness. That said, the staff were very attentive and helpful and a real credit to the hotel.
