“Christmas Stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

My partner and I went to Reading to see his relatives before Christmas, we had booked into the Calcot Hotel for one night. What a disaster! When we arrived we were told that we could have an evening meal so we booked one for 7pm. Later whilst in the room a call came through asking if we would be willing to have a cavery as that was the only type of food available and reluctantly we said yes.

At 7pm we went to the restaurant only to find it closed and set up for a party evening. We continaully went to the restaurant entrance till 7.30, I then went to reception to ask what had happened to our booking. I was told to go to the restaurant entrance and to go into the restaurant. We where then meet by staff who directed us to a small table behind a pillar and we where told we could eat before the majority of the party guests arrived. There was a set party menu, not the cavery we had been expecting, though part of the meal was a cavery. There was no price on the menu. But it was clear that a lot of party guests where waiting to come in so we decided to eat straight away.

The starter came after they removed the cling film!!! What a treat!! We then went up to the cavery, where no of the meat resembled meat and there was only one type of potatoe, carrorts, peas and no brussel sprouts or parsnips. The pudding was just as interesting!

The next day we complained to reception but our complaints where ignored, we where told the meal was £14.00, which it certainly was not worth!! We certainly would not stay in this hotel again or recommend that anyone eat there.

I was disappointed to hear of your experience. The hotel was extreemly busy on the night in question however this should not have impacted on your enjoyment. Positive comments are normally received about the Carvery, starters and desserts are served. I can assure you that all meats joints are freshly delivered from a local butcher and prepared on site. I apologise for the way in which your complaint was dealt with as there is always a Manager on duty who should have been called to resolve your complaint.
Please accept my sincere apologies.

“Pleasantly Surprised”

On first impression I was dissapointed with my "prison cell" style small single room. The bed was wedged against one wall with a small bedside table alongside. A small T.V was positioned atop the closet. The bed turned out to be surprisingly comfortable, the room was exceptionally well maintained and the selection of tea & coffee was accompanied by a kettle with a well stocked supply of milk. The walk-in shower had a large, directly overhead showerhead with great water pressure. The free wi-fi is a welcome surprise.
I had dinner & drinks at the bar, staff were friendly and I thought that it was reasonably good value. Food is not available until 7pm and this is a drawback as there is a big rush for the restaurant upon opening. A 6pm start would allieviate this.
I had a meeting at a nearby business park the next morning and left my train ticket on the bedside table. I called the hotel & the helpful staff located the ticket and kept it at reception for me, when I arrived back at the hotel I enquired about a taxi to the train station (minimum fare is 10GBP) whereupon the manager,Tony offered me a lift directly there. As it was cold & raining I greatly appreciated this offer. I made my train on time and for this gesture alone I would rate this stay a pleasant experience and great value.

“Comfortable bed and nice atmosphere but a warning from a light sleeper”

The staff are friendly & efficient, the food was of a nice standard (and resonably priced) and as a lone female traveller I felt quite at home in the bar and restaurant. This would have been rated "vey good" if the walls/ceilings in the bedroom weren't paper thin. If you are a light sleeper you might like to ask for a top floor room else you spend the night listening to creeky floorboards.

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor room at the back of the hotel if you are a light sleeper

I use this hotel regularly for drinks with clients as it is very close to Reading town centre but also a quick and simple drive from the M4. We also recommend this hotel to clients when staying in the area and they are always happy.

I personally stayed for the first time last night, as a treat for my fiancées birthday. The staff were extremely friendly, the food was excellent and the prices were very reasonable.

I will definitely be staying again over Xmas as a treat and will continue to recommend this hotel!

Nice hotel stayed here on business for a few weeks. Very friendly clean hotel. Some rooms are a bit pokey but if you get lucky there are some which are a bit more spacious. Good free Wifi. Only negative is the evening meals poor choice and poor quality which is a real shame as there are not many options close by. They do make a great breakfast though !!

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments; all feedback is important to us and your review has beed discussed with the team here at the Calcot Hotel.

We are in the processs of changing the a'la carte menu in the restaurant, to offer a wider selection for our guests. The breakfasts we serve at the hotel always receive positive comments, so I was pleased to hear that you enjoyed yours too.

Whilst the majority of our rooms are of a standard size for a three star hotel, we do have a few smaller 'single rooms' which we sell at a lower rate when all the other rooms are sold.

Thank you, once again, for your time in writing such a kind review & we hope to welcome you back in the future.
