My partner and I went to Reading to see his relatives before Christmas, we had booked into the Calcot Hotel for one night. What a disaster! When we arrived we were told that we could have an evening meal so we booked one for 7pm. Later whilst in the room a call came through asking if we would be willing to have a cavery as that was the only type of food available and reluctantly we said yes.
At 7pm we went to the restaurant only to find it closed and set up for a party evening. We continaully went to the restaurant entrance till 7.30, I then went to reception to ask what had happened to our booking. I was told to go to the restaurant entrance and to go into the restaurant. We where then meet by staff who directed us to a small table behind a pillar and we where told we could eat before the majority of the party guests arrived. There was a set party menu, not the cavery we had been expecting, though part of the meal was a cavery. There was no price on the menu. But it was clear that a lot of party guests where waiting to come in so we decided to eat straight away.
The starter came after they removed the cling film!!! What a treat!! We then went up to the cavery, where no of the meat resembled meat and there was only one type of potatoe, carrorts, peas and no brussel sprouts or parsnips. The pudding was just as interesting!
The next day we complained to reception but our complaints where ignored, we where told the meal was £14.00, which it certainly was not worth!! We certainly would not stay in this hotel again or recommend that anyone eat there.
