“A Holiday Inn convert!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

My partner and I booked into the Holiday Inn for a night's stay following a wedding in nearby Silchester. I wasn't expecting much from this hotel except for a functional night's stay that merely did the job. I called the day before with a couple of general questions and to ask if there was any way of checking in before the wedding and if we could leave our bags somewhere. The receptionist was great: very friendly and helpful and added that there might be a possibility of sharing a taxi to the venue if other guests are going and that she would hook us up if that were the case. She also added an early check in request for us which was really good. When we arrived we were given a warm greeting and someone went to check that our room had been cleaned. It hadn't, but they swapped us to another room so that we could go and get ready and also called a taxi for us.

The room was much nicer than I had expected with a choice of pillows, toiletries in the bathroom and all facilities such as a hairdryer, TV and ironing board. Front desk also gave us a quick courtesy call to make sure that everything was to our satisfaction. We didn't make use of the mini gym or the restaurant but probably would have if we had stayed longer. I'd never stayed in a Holiday Inn before and was under the impression that they were a very basic, no frills chain that provided you a bad for the night and little else - following this experience though I'll definitely be staying in Holiday Inns in future - very impressed with everything, especially for the competitive price.

“very well looked after”

We stayed here on Saturday night as we were attending a function at the hotel. Whilst the building may not look much from the exterior, from the moment we arrived the staff could not have been more helpful or friendly.

Tons of free car parking.

Bedrooms are a little dated but very clean and comfortable and have everything you would expect and need.

We were able to relax and enjoy a drink in the lounge bar prior to our event and were even offered some complimentary canapés.

The function itself was great. We were in a good sized function room with it's own bar facilities and pretty much self contained, away from the public areas. Food and service were great.

Breakfast on Sunday morning was great. It's a refreshing change to find a hotel where you don't have to help yourself to a cooked selection that has been sat under buffet lights for hours. All the hot food was cooked to order and was served in a timely fashion - I had the eggs Benedict which were superb. Friendly staff and freshly ground coffee made it a great start to the day.

It was a refreshing change to find a hotel where you are treated as individuals and where the staff genuinely seem to care.

“Could do better”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2011

I stayed for three nights. Check in was efficient and friendly but the room was not very clean. There was dust on the carpets under the drawers and wardrobe, I didn't look under the bed. The bathroom was dated, the toilet stained and the extractor fan dirty. Unfortunately, there were holes in the wallpaper too in the bedroom. Zip and link beds are good for the hotel but not very comfortable for the guest. Breakfast was good but I do prefer properly brewed coffee, not from a machine. Could you not provide Cafetieres for those who want just a normal coffee? I do also think that internet access is too expensive and is it too much to provide biscuits with the tea/coffee tray in the rooms? They don't cost much!

Dear Guest, thank you very much for taking the time and trouble to post your review following your recent stay at Holiday Inn Reading West. All the feedback we received is valued and used to help us learn lessons and to improve the service and facilities we offer.

I am really sorry that on this occasion your stay did not beat your expectations. There is no excuse for your bedroom not having been cleaned thoroughly and I will address this with the team.

The beds we use here are a high specification Hypnos base and mattress. The reason for zip and link beds in some of our rooms does give us the ability to create twin rooms when required but also gives single guests a bed larger than a standard double and they do have a mattress topper. I'm very sorry you found this uncomfortable, had you mentioned this we could quite easily have helped you move to another room with a standard bed.

At breakfast our filter coffee is freshly brewed using ground coffee. You will also have seen and walk past our fresh ground bean machine and guests are welcome to have cappuccinos, lattes, espressos or regular black coffees from here.

Thank you for your feedback regarding internet charges and the provision of biscuits, we will take this son board.

Once again I do apologise for the shortfalls you experienced however, what is more disappointing for me is that you didn't feel comfortable raising any of these matter over the three nights you were with us. We are a people business and we don't always get everything right, but had we known we could have resolved on night one and you would have had a more comfortable stay.

I would be more than happy to discuss any of these matters with you if you would like to contact me and I'd be more than happy to offer you a preferred rate when you next need to stay in the Reading area.

Kind regards

“Has to be a reason to stay here”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011

The location is right on the A4 - so not much around and there has to be a reason to stay here. In our case it was for a wedding locally so it was perfect for us. Check in was extremely pleasant and helpful and super fast. They were kind enough to let us have an early check in so we could change before the wedding. The lobby and public areas are clean and welcoming. The rest of the hotel is a maze of rooms and you can walk for ages trying to find yours. The room itself had the basics but was actually quite average. It does annoy me when you have tea/coffee making facilities but they only give you 2 sachets of coffee so basically you can only have one cup each, before having to call for more. Anyway - that's not really important - just a niggle of mine. The bathroom was very clean but very "70's" in decor. And those horrible squeezee soap dispensers in the shower. Yuk! I hate them. But that might be a personal thing - I just keep thinking about who else has used it before me. No "bits" provided in the bathroom so make sure you bring your own shampoo etc. The room was very hot and we couldn't open the windows for ventilation so had to put the air conditioning on for the whole night. At least it worked! Bed was very firm and the pillows even more so - but we only had to stay there one night - and after a very long day and enjoyable wedding - we didn't really notice the lack of comfort until the morning. Breakfast was excellent with a good supply of fresh fruit - lovely bacon and sausages and scrambled eggs. At least they don't leave fried eggs, dripping in oil , on a tray for ages. They also have a good selection of cereals, cooked mushrooms and beans if you want it. It wasn't vast , but what was there was a nice choice. I cannot fault the staff and service. They all had a smile on their face, were very attentive and seemed to care. Which , for me, makes a well run hotel. All in all, it gave us what we wanted and was absolutely fine for a nights stay. Furthermore, for what we paid, it was excellent value for money. Don't expect 4 or 5 star, but you will get what you pay for - as long as it's at the right price.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your review.

I am very pleased that the service you received from all the team was faultless and attentive, the team work very hard to try and make a difference and will appreciate you feeding this back.

We are not a 4 or 5 star hotel as you point out and we don't try to be. We know our market and try hard to understand and recognise the needs of our guests and deliver great service.

I was a little surprised that you found the bedrooms corridors a maze as we only have 50 bedrooms on two floors and each floor only has one corridor. The hotel is a '90s construction in a courtyard style. I will however review the signage and see if we can make directions clearer.

The hotel was built with sealed triple glazed windows due the location; you mention that we are just off the A4. This ensures a peaceful nights sleep without disruption from external noise and as you state in your feedback we do have a very effective air cooling system working in all our guest bedrooms.

We are more than happy to provide additional guest supplies during your stay. The Lux shampoo and Dove body wash we provide are a brand standard, however we do also have individual toiletry items available. These are provided to all our Platinum Priority Club Reward Guests and in our Executive bedrooms as standard but if you have a preference for these you only need to ask.

Your kind words regarding breakfast are very much appreciated and will be passed on to the team. I actually think we offer a very good selection of hot and cold food, including hot items cooked to order.

Thank you again for all your valuable feedback, it is important to us.

I do hope you will choose to stay at Holiday Inn Reading West again soon.
