“Noisy!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We stayed here for 2 nights in Feb 2012.
Stayed in room 143! 200 numbered rooms above, Well, you can almost hear a pin drop above, The worst sound proofed rooms I have ever experienced. We were kept up till past 1am with people stomping up and down upstairs and car doors slamming (Car park just yards from bedroom door.
On top of that stained duvet cover and a TV that you cannot receive any BBC programmes!! Now whilst I expect poor tv reception in Europe, NOT in Reading!!
Next morning, spoke to duty Manager who stated she had already received 2 other complaints from guests regarding noise, but the occupants above were checking out that morning, so should not be a problem. She would ask Maintenance to sort TV and Houskeeping Bedding.
We were out all day, and on our return were dissapointed to see TV had not been sorted...My wife went to reception to be told by another duty Manager that all the rooms could not receive BBC since the digital changeover, in the meantime, we had barely been in the room some 30 mins when the noise from upstairs had started again, even to the point that you can hear people peeing above you!! let alone all the stomping and other rooms TV'S.
I immediately went to see the duty Manager who promptly moved us to room 718 on the opposite side of the complex on the second floor. This resolved the appalling noisy situation. Guess what this TV had all BBC Channels, so were lied to!, but, .......sad to say no ITV Channels!!!
Wish that was all the negatives finished with, but unfortunatly not, Breakfasts were appalling both mornings, not the quality of the food, but the service, Moronic, lazy, waitresses whom you had to approach if you wanted to order Tea/Coffee with you Buffet breakfast, even then you may not get it, without a repeat request!!
On a final note, I must praise Lisa, Breakfast Supervisor, who was doing everyone elses job plus her own to keep things running smoothly at breakfast. A credit to the Hotel, unlike some of the other personnel.

Room Tip: "Choose a room on the second floor and not 100 or 200 numbered rooms"

Thank you for taking the time to post your review. It is rare for us to recieve noise issues in this part of the building. As the building is reletaely modern and purpose built soundproofing was a consideration at construction stage, however now you have raised it I will look into the matter. I am however glad we could accomodate you in another room which was quieter. I would like to thank you for your praise for Lisa and i will thank her personally.
I do however have to take exception to the use of the words describing other members of my team and I do not believe this the correct forum to be using such terms.
Should you wish to discuss this matter please contact me directly rpynegar@deverevenues.co.uk

“Don't bother!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We have stayed at Wokefield Park a few times in the past and found it a lovely place that we were happy to return to whenever we were in the area. How disappointed we were on returning recently, for the first time in 2 years to find that the place has changed immeasurably for the worse! This is such a shame because Wokefield Park is in a beautiful location in open countryside yet still with very easy access to the M4 and Reading and could be/has been a truly memorable and unique place.
The main problem currently seems to stem from low moral and a pervading bad attitude among staff. Staff at reception were brusque at best and my two requests during our stay, for the bathroom to be cleaned ( see below) and a query about why our room had not been cleaned at all one day were met with dismissive, defensive remarks- not a hint of an apology in either case, and an inclination to 'pass the buck' and blame other departments for the failings.
None of the staff seem happy in their work: it was rare to see a smile, or to take pride in what they are doing; many were unprofessional. The most worrying event was when I asked at reception for another key to our room, this was produced instantly when I gave the room number, without any check of my identity or how many keys we already held.
The building itself is tired and in need of a refurb, or a coat of paint at the very least, but the most worrying aspect is how dirty the whole place was. Our experience echoes those of other reviewers. The walls in the room were covered in scuff marks and stains, the carpet was stained and there was a thick layer of dust around the tiles in the bathroom, mould on the grout in the shower and the airvent in the bathroom covered in a layer of dust that lookad as if it had built up over many years.
Overall very disappointing and really rather sad: what has happened???

Room Tip: Try to get a room with an open outlook over the golfcourse.

Thank you for your review, I have shared your comments with the relevant department heads and believe our Guest Service Manager has communicated with you directly on the matters you raise. As you will see from the recent reviews you mention, they are generally good with our Trip Advisor score increasing. All Venues change over time and I often re visit properties finding the changes in their business have changed the Venue from how I remember it, so i can emphasise with the point you raise.

“Not memorable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

My wife and I stayed two nights in Feruary 2012, guests at a wedding on the second day. There was nothing disastrous about our stay but then there was nothing memorable either.
The reception staff were courteous but not over friendly. The Mansion House bedroom was spacious and reasonably clean, dirty marks on the walls and a thick layer of dust on top of the wardrobe let it down. Would also be nice to have a biscuit or similar provided to have with the tea and coffee facilities. The food again was okay but not very exciting and there appeared to be quite a lot, including the canapes, that were mass produced. Breakfast was not the best quality, eggs floating in grease, very salty bacon etc, and there appeared to be a lack of staff around to check the quality or the stock levels.
On the positive side, the bedrroom was very quiet so we had two excellent nights sleep. The quality of service varied a fair bit, but it was generally good, especially the male bar staff in the Mansion House.
I could almost have given the Wokefield a 'very good' marking since we did enjoy our stay, but we didn't leave thinking that it had been a memorable experience.

Thank you for your review. It sounds like you did have a good experience if not a truly memorable one. I would also like to thank you for your kind words for our bar team and please be assured this has been shared with the team.

“Staff unfriendly”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Stayed here end of January for one night. Receptionist was rude and unwelcoming. Was glad to get upstairs to the room, which was clean and modern. We had a decent view, overlooking partly car park and golf course. Decided we would go for sauna, long walk and no staff. At least we had the place to ourselves.

We used the freephone at reception to call for a taxi. And I have to say the company they use Platinum Cars, what a wonderful service they provided. The driver was courteous, friendly and shared some funny stories. We were picked up late in the evening very promptly and again
used their services the next day. Would highly recommend their services.

Highlight of the stay was coming back from our evening out a
and picking up free hot chocolate (scrummy) and biscuits from reception.

Thank you for your review. I am sorry about your experience with reception. However I am pleased to read that your visit after this time was enjoyable and that the late evening complimentary hot chocolate went down well!

“Beautiful setting for a hotel break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

We stayed for one night and were allocated rooms in the Wellington Lodge. Although this was a bit out the way, we had to drive across the complex to get to the swimming pool, the rooms were lovely.
We spent Saturday afternoon walking around the grounds, had a game of crazy golf - only £1, played in the nintendo lounge and went in the swimming pool. There were lots of other activities advertised, mud buggies, ropes course, archery etc, but all of them were quite pricey at £25 - £30 per person. It's worth noting the pool is all one depth, 1.2m, so not very suitable for kids. Our nephew was a bit disapointed his feet didn't touch the bottom!
The staff were all very friendly and helpful. We arrived two hours early but they got our rooms ready early, and the restaurant and bar staff were only too happy to oblige a with a fussy 7 year old's requests!
Everyone in our party enjoyed the free tea, coffee, biscuits and fruit that were dotted around the complex!
We had double and triple rooms in the Wellington Lodge, and both were nice and modern, spacious and had wetrooms with monsoon rain showers. The triple room was HUGE! It had a double and single bed, but you could quite easily have fitted two more in there!
We had breakfast in the Mansion House restaurant, and there was a large selection of excellent food.
Our only complaint from the whole trip was the poor tv signal in the rooms, so the men had to go to the bar to watch the rugby :-p
All in all a lovely stay in a great hotel. We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: Wellington lodge rooms were lovely, but a bit out the way. Worth it if you don't mind a bit of a...
