“Let Down By Disgraceful Customer Service....Avoid The Terrine!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2012

people found this review helpful

Firstly I will start my review with a couple of the positives as, despite our bad experience with this place, I am still able to appreciate the good parts. The hotel itself is very quirky and quite beautiful. We had a cell room which felt luxurious and clean and was a very good spacious size. The bed was amazingly comfortable. And the location for Oxford City was perfect.

And now for the bad....

We booked our room on the basis that we paid £75 for the room if we spent £100 on food and drink within the restaurant. My partner & I therefore booked a table and had a 3 course meal and a bottle of wine. Within 2 hours of returning to our room my partner was then up all night on the loo - not exactly how you want to spend your anniversary get away. My partner was convinced that the chicken terrine he had eaten that night was the reason for him being so ill. He was up on the hour every hour until about 9am.

From 6am we attempted to get hold of a Manager or person on Duty and we were told by reception that someone would be in touch with us. After 2 more hours we still hadnt heard anything and despite the reception being made aware my partner was unwell, no one offered us anything or came to see if we were ok which we were really suprised about. After about another hour or so we eventually heard from the Hotel Manager who wanted to run through a very timely questionairre with my partner about everything he had eaten for the last week!! The Manager conducted this over the phone and again nothing was offered to us to make sure we were ok. If anything the Manager was argumentative with my partner about whether or not his illness was caused by the food he had eaten in their restaurant. My partner advised the Manager that we were not prepared to pay for our restaurant bill due to our bad experience and that needed to be removed from our bill before we checked out.

When we went to the reception to check out we were then greeted by the Deputy Manager who wanted to speak to us about what had happened. It soon became apparant that he just wanted re-confirm to us the Hotel's supposed good reputation and how they were renowned for their food before they became a Hotel. My partner was still not feeling well at this point, and again we were not offered anything and we were very suprised at how he wanted to discuss this quite loudly and openly within reception among other guests checking in. Surely that isnt going to give them a great impression?? I found this man to be rude, inconsiderate and quite pompous and he clearly had no interest in what we were going through or how my partner felt.

When we checked out the food bill had been removed from our charge and we paid for our room and left the hotel. The Manager advised us that they would carry out their independent checks on the food from the restaurant that night and let us know in due course.

Approximately 2 weeks later we received a letter from the Hotel which again just seemed focused around promoting their reputation whilst informing us that predictably their checks came back all ok. We were not surprised by this and ultimately they didnt check the food that my partner consumed so in essence this was their word against ours. There was no mention within the letter about us paying the bill and therefore we considered this to be a closed matter. However we were still surprised that the Hotel didnt offer us anything in order to compensate us for our bad experience and attempt to keep our custom. But at that stage we were happy for it all to just be over.

Nearly 2 months later I have checked my bank account to find that the Hotel have taken it upon themselves to just withdraw the money anyway! This actually has made me overdrawn within that account which I have now been charged for. We were absolutely shocked and disgusted that they had done this without any prior warning. We would have at least expected to be invoiced by the Hotel if they were indeed chasing the payment for the meal that made my partner ill.

The Hotel were able to just take this payment when it suited them due to them pre-authorising my card when we first checked in during our stay. I would highly reccommend people to not agree to this in future as it is basically paying for a service before you have received it and then that company can just take your money whenever it suits them, regardless of whether you have made a complaint or not.

On realising the payment had been taken we immediately tried to get hold of the Hotel Manager on the Friday and the first communication I received from him was the following Tuesday when he returned my call. Depsite me calling every day and leaving messages for him. Evidently if he does not work there over the weekend then there is no one in charge to deal with any problems! Which seems a joke in itself. It was also very funny to us that he only decided to contact us the day that our bank successfully done a charge back and we received our money back. What a coincidence for him to suddenly then get in touch.

On finally speaking to this guy all I can say is that his attitude stinks!! Whoever hired him to be a Manager needs their head tested. All he wanted to do is argue with me! Everything I said to him which were facts about how we had been treated he kept coming back to me and saying that he disagreed and how he wanted to counter act my argument! I explained to him that I wasn't lying and these were facts about how we had been treated by his Hotel and all he could say to me was that he disagreed. I have never dealt with anything like it. Clearly the "customer is always right" motto goes out the window with this place. They are not prepared to learn from their mistakes and try to improve their customer service. They think their reputation is enough to carry them! And again, we were offered nothing to compensate our bad experience which has been made even worse now by how our complaint has been dealt with afterwards. A complete disgrace!

If you pay top whack then you expect a top service. Unfortunately that isnt the case with the Oxford Malmaison! Clearly this place is struggling which is why they are offering deals on their restaurant. What goes to prove this even more is that they are prepared to argue with a customer to great lengths over a £122 bill.

If you do make the mistake of staying at this Hotel then I advise you to not waste your money eating in their overpriced restaurant and definately avoid the Chicken Terrine!

Dear Missloveibiza
I am very surprised to read your review and the inaccuracy that you clearly have exaggerated and also fabricated because we charged you for a meal that was not the cause of your partners illness. This was confirmed by a 3rd party company and the copy a letter stating this was sent to you as comfirmation. On the morning of your check out this was explained in full to both you and your partner and was it was mutaully agreed by all that if the allegation was not found to be the hotels fault we would charge you for your meal that you had consumed.
Our Night Manager did offer to come to your room but you refused and infact came down to reception instead.
The Deputy GM you dealt with offered and served you water in the lobby and both myself and him spent time with you and I infact offered you to contact me if you would like to return as I knew it was a special occasion and it was ruined by your partner becoming ill (not due to the hotel)
I am very sorry that your partner became ill during your visit which spoiled your anniversary however this should not be taken out on the hotel and I believe this is compeltely inappropriate of yourself to attack a business in this way.
On the recent conversation that you had with the Deputy GM you had made it very clear that you would not take into consideration the view of the independent body despite being well aware of the format which was agreed and expained to you on check out.
Mentioning that you would use this platform to 'slate/murder us' if we did not give into you is again not what this platform is to be used for.
This review has been disputed and sent to Trip Advisor as it is not factual and is congocted on the fact you are displeased with paying for something you agreed to pay for.
Once again I would like to make clear that we did empathise and try to assist you as much as possible and the food allegation was confirmed that it was not anything to do with the hotel.
As a hotel we respond to all positve and constructive feedback by our guests which you will see from the history below and I fully appreciate receiving guests true comments from their stay as it is a way for us to improve.
Thank you

“Well worth the expense”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Stayed here for one night in January and found the whole experience to be luxurious and atmospheric. The fact that the hill on the castle next door was the place of execution for the old gaol really added to the spookiness of the place. The room was very plush and the rain-shower in the bathroom was a nice touch. Ordered room service which was prompt and the food good. Would definitely stay here again should I need to go to Oxford. Only niggle is that the reception area is so dimly lit that you can't read there, but that is only a minor thing. Lovely place.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in the main gaol part, the rooms in the annexe are nice, but lack the whole atmosp...

Dear bodgejob, thank you for your review, the mound on the side of the hotel is a very nice feature and staying in one of our Superior Doubles or Superior Twins would allow you to have a great view of it. I am encouraged by the comments regarding room service; it is not often I get feedback about this aspect of our service although very happy that it was to your high expectations. Regarding your room tip, though the rooms in the main jail are very nice, they are a different room type than those in the annexes, if you booked a room in the annexe, it will not be a Cell Double or a Superior Cell, however the rates would reflect this and are lower. Thanks again for the review and I look forward to seeing you on a return visit.

“Great weekend away - cannot fault it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

This hotel is stunningly different but wonderfully comfortable. Stayed in superior room, so two cells big for the bedroom and one cell big for the bathroom. Lots of nice touches and the best breakfast in bed type service in any hotel - a proper picnic basket full of stuff. Had dinner in the restaurant - that was nice too. Decent wine list.

We notice the thermostat on our shower was broken before dinner and hotel fixed while we were having dinner.

Used the valet parking for car and it when we left was ready to roll - you have to book that well in advance though, as only 20 spaces. Do so by telephone as cannot do online.

Don't forget the to visit the original cell in the basement too!

I'll be back :)

Room Tip: Try and stay in the main building where it's a proper converted prison cell. It's a quite w...

Dear spodling, thank you for your review and it is wonderful that you decided to stay in one of our Superior Cells, they are indeed spacious with their walk in shower and separate roll top bath. Continental breakfast can be ordered to the room and I am happy that you found our offerings to be substantial. Car parking spaces are a premium; not only in the hotel but in Oxford generally, booking therefore is essential, I would advise telephoning the hotel directly to ensure you have a space booked, the reception team blocks the space onto your reservation straight away. Alternatively when booking with our reservations team directly please ask to get a space booked for you. I look forward to welcoming you back for another great weekend!

“Phenomenal hotel - the ultimate romantic getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We first visited Malmaison four years ago and have wanted to go back ever since. Having managed to get someone to look after the kids we booked in for a romantic pre-Valentine's weekend away and the hotel did not disappoint. It was even better this time around.

We stayed in a cell room on an excellent dinner, bed and breakfast package (£265). The cell rooms are nothing short of AMAZING! They comprise three of the original cells - two that are the bedroom and one for the bathroom. This means the rooms are way more spacious than the average hotel room (hard to believe three men used to share 1/3 of this space when it was a prison!). As well as being spacious the rooms are extremely quiet / private due to the thick walls - this guarantees a great night's sleep.

Highly recommend the "Visitors Room" bar for a pre-dinner drinks. A good range of cocktails and a very cool venue.

Dinner in the Brasserie restaurant in the ground floor and was very good - we had the steak which is highly recommended. The service was adequate rather than exceptional but it was a very busy Saturday night.

Breakfast is also in the Brasserie and similar to other reviews and despite the food being excellent (a superb continental selection and nice cooked options) the service was painfully inconsistent and slow. We had to repeatedly ask for coffee / tea, toast and other requests. [If you are reading this] even getting a few more bottles of Ketchup and HP sauce might be an idea as a starting point guys. You (the hotel) does need to address breakfast issues because everything else at the hotel is off the scale good.

We will absolutely be visiting again. This is one of the most unique hotels in the UK and we could not recommend it highly enough. Certainly a sure fire winner for a romantic weekend away.

One small tip - worth booking car parking - it is £20 per night but a full valet service and you can drive to the door. There is also free Wi-Fi although bandwidth can be a bit of a challenge.

Dear textlad, thank you for your review. It is truly wonderful that you have remembered us after four years and decided to still stay with us. Since then we have made many alterations and renovations and your comment regarding an experience that surpassed the previous shows that we have improved since then. Our rooms are indeed very quiet, as it used to be a prison some of our walls are four feet thick! I am concerned to read your comments regarding breakfast service, please rest assured we are doing our utmost to tackle this area, unfortunately being Sunday a day of rest most of our guests like to come and dine with us right before check out leaving us having to cope with a full hotel at once which can be challenging however rest assured we wont stop until we find a fix.
Thank you again for taking the time to post your feedback and I look forward to welcome you back to the Oxford Mal soon.

“Unique hotel in lovely surroundings. Great for somewhere different in Oxford.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

I have stayed twice at the Malmaison in Oxford. First time was wowed by the quirky rooms and unique hotel.. stayed there with my husband on a weekend break and for this I would highly recommend the hotel.

This time however, I went back with colleagues for work, including our board meeting which was held in the hotel.. bedrooms still great, but I noticed this time that the lighting was very low in the rooms and throughout the hotel. The restaurant menu was also quite limited.. nice food for one meal, but when staying for any length of time and eating more than one meal there, the choice was very limited and the specials were off the menu throughout our stay, which seemed a little pointless.

The castle setting and quirky prison cell bedrooms are the main focus / attraction for the hotel and I would recommend a one off trip with a partner for a romantic night or two away in Oxford. Would I recommend for business purposes? Probably not, as the hotel is not set up for business purposes, unlike others that may be better suited to this and the dark lighting thoughout the hotel, including the bedrooms and meeting rooms, meant it was nigh on impossible to work / read easily.

Rooms are nice and comfortable, as are the beds and the bathrooms are generous in size with large walk in showers and free standing roll top baths. Service was pretty good and the decor interesting and well done.

Dear mobilelisa, thank you for your review, I am very happy that we have made you a fan of the Oxford Mal. We are currently scheduling to do some refurbishment to the hotel and lighting is a main aspect we will be looking at. The chef is currently working on creating a new menu for the Brasserie for all areas so this will be addressed but I am sorry that you felt this was limited. I look forward to seeing you for the 3rd stay at Malmaison Oxford.
