My wife and I stayed in The Bat & Ball Inn while attending a conference at Ripon College. Being Americans, we relished the opportunity to take a few days out from a hectic life and experience a small English village and a local pub. We truly enjoyed it. Breakfasts were very good, with good service; evenings in the pub for dinner or a nightcap, a pleasure. And we were made to feel welcomed. We also appreciated the college just up the road, the intensely pastoral feel of the place (although busy roads are nearby, Oxford's only a few miles distant, and a BMW manufacturing plant is fairly close by), and the fairly ancient church in the town. One of our pleasant experiences was walking down the hill (one-half mile) on Church Street through the fields and past fruit-bearing trees and bushes to the Thames, which consists there of two streams maybe ten feet across. Although we didn't have time to explore them, numerous footpaths lead to various places, including neighboring towns.
The rooms (we stayed in two while there) can be small, but they are nevertheless comfortable, and the bathrooms are clean, up-to-date, and well-maintained.
Being animal lovers, we were delighted that the owner's really, really sweet Terrier "Honey" had the run of the pub. Perhaps some wouldn't be so comfortable with that, but we were. Honey loved to be petted, and we were ready to oblige.
Most of the food we had there was quite good (you probably can't miss with the "Batburger"), but I had a steak that was not the best.
Still, we'd go back quickly. We've already revisited Cuddesdon and The Bat & Ball by "walking" up and down the streets on Google.
