“Used jam on breakfast tray was the last straw”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

I was there for one night only, and that was one night too much.

When I arrived, because I was limping, the receptionist kindly offered to have someone carry the luggage up the stairs. I accepted, but after an hour, went down and got it myself.

The wi-fi would not work, and only after a 3 hour struggle, they finally re-set the routers and it worked that night. Not so the next morning, no wi-fi at all the next morning.

The hair dryer quit after 1 minute, and after cooling down, would run for 10 seconds.

Breakfast was prompt, but when I went to put the jam on the toast, the jam had been opened and used by someone previously.

At check-out, the clerk herd all my complaints, and when I got to the used jam on the toast, he refunded 25 pounds to my credit card.

Although the location was very central, the issues were inexcusable.

Room Tip: Chose another hotel. But if you do chose this one, take an upper room since there is a club on the...

“Shabby, but very central.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2011

Very central location and this is what you're paying for. The staff were very friendly and helpful: after reading the awful reviews we asked to see the room first and there was no issue with this. They were also happy to look after our luggage after check out. 10 minutes walk from the train station.

We stayed in room 24, which is on the second floor at the back of the hotel. The room and ensuite were perfectly clean, but overall it was shabby. The bed was broken on one side, no quilt - only a very thin sheet and a small fleece blanket (there were extra throws, but the one we used had several holes in), there were dirty marks on the walls and the grout in the bathroom was covered in black mould.

There wasn't a huge amount of noise from the nightclub itself, but the aircon units situated behind the hotel are loud. The hotel entrance is used by smokers and club goers - asking people to move was a pain. The burger bar next to the nightclub really isn't that bad. We found the other guests slamming doors late at night was more disturbing!

The breakfast is a basic continental spread delivered to your room; plenty for two people, but not to everyone's taste. There are tons of cafes and coffee shops should you skip breakfast.

Definitely ask for a room to the rear of the hotel and on the top floor. There is no lift, not disability friendly. The shower was fine and there was plenty of hot water. Towels were clean, decent quality toiletries supplied, as well as tea, coffee and hot chocolate.

Ladies: take a hair dryer, the one in the room conked out after 2 minutes use!

I wouldn't choose to stay here again, but if you need a very central location for a short stay then it's ideal.

Room Tip: Book a room at the rear of the hotel on the top floor.

“Very ordinary and overpriced in noisy area with poor facilities - only central location is in its favour”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

This is a very mediocre hotel and should only be considered if there really is no alternative. It is very central, and Oxford is very expensive, but there are far better B&Bs just up the Woodstock and Banbury roads that offer a far more welcoming experience. Unfortunately, when I stayed here, in late July 2011, these options were already full and my budget could only stretch to this place as we needed to be central for business reasons. The photo used in the hotel online advertising is a remarkable achievement in projecting a style that simply does not exist when you actually arrive to check-in. Breakfast was a disgrace and would have happily not had it included as there is a quite decent coffee shop just opposite. The room was at the back but was still noisy due to some kind of fan running all throughout the night. Parking is a challenge but you can use the metered bays in a nearby street after 6:00pm as long as you dont mind feeding the meter by 8:00am the next day. In summary, I wont be back now that I know Oxford a little better and would always make an effort to hunt out an alternative to this place.

“Do not book this hotel. Period.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011

Very dismal dump. Friendly greeting and helpful directions could not make up for the shabby state of the room and bathroom. At the price, 75 pounds, I expected simple and functional. This was not nice enough to be called a "student" or hostel room. No deadbolt or chain on door, which left me feeling very vulnerable. Blinds would not close, many furniture and fixture repairs were needed, and I didn't dream of using the shower - took "sponge bath." Pounding music late into night made sleep difficult. In haste I did not read these reviews and ended up having the worst hotel stay of a month-long trip. Awful.

“terrible night's sleep, do not stay here”

Hotel was above a night club, our room was at the front above the door so it was very noisy till late into the night. The hotel doorway was used as a smoking spot, so the lower parts of the hotel smelled stongly of smoke. The room was tiny, the bathroom needed a lot of TLC.

The secure parking that we paid extra for wasn't secure at all. We returned to collect our car to find that it had been left open all night.
