Homelea Guest house
Stayed here in May 08, sorry has taken me a while to get pen to paper, wonderful warm welcome from Matthew, fresh plunger coffee and a chat about Oxford on our arrival. As noted on previous posts Matthew gave us info on the tow path walk which we found without any problems and thoroughly enjoyed the walk into Oxford.
Had our choice of 2 rooms and decided on out the back downstairs, a comfortable well appointed room with a small shower in one corner, the toilet in a separate room in the other corner. The upstairs room was at the front of the building and a most attractive room but despite the double glazing felt much happier being away from the road so chose the room at the back. Not used to these English showers so thought ours wasn’t working initially but once given instructions, plenty of hot water. As also previously reported the wet towels didn’t have a hanging area but as they were changed each day wasn’t a problem. Matthew does work but is easily contacted by mobile through the day if you need him.
Breakfast was exceptionally good, we didn’t have any of the lack of food as reported by a couple of posts, plenty of fruit choice as well as cereals, yogurts, a full English breakfast of choice and good fresh plunger coffee or tea. Although not large, we used the garden area and picnic table out the back to share a bottle of wine and a picnic dinner one evening – after a big day walking we just wanted to have an early night so this was perfect and Matthew supplied the wine glasses to help our picnic.
Was sorry we only allowed 2 nights for Oxford (had3 days) as there is so much to see and do, great pubs which we tried on Matthews suggestions plus the best walking tour organised from the tourist office with a local guide who in our case was just outstanding so highly recommend this tour. Easy bus connections in and out of the town centre by bus from Homelea or a rather long but do-able walking distance if you are not too tired.
We experienced top hospitality from Matthew, enjoyed hearing the family history with his family and its Oxford connections going back over 200 years, about as old as Australia’s settlement. For anyone with a car Homelea is a handy spot as parking is a premium in Oxford. Certainly enjoyed our stay at Homelea and appreciated the ride to the Train Station on our last day.
