“Moving forward”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2011

My wife and I met my extended family at the Foxcombe Hotel for Christmas lunch. As my wife and I had to travel the farthest we also spent one night at this hotel.
We were welcomed on our arrival and once settled, we were given a short tour of the dining room and the bars etc. although like many small hotels in todays climate, there was several areas that were slightly tired and needed bit of a face lift, the fairly new owner had revamped the main bar which was spacious clean and bright with an excellent snooker/pool table etc.
The Christmas meal we had was of a good standard, as was breakfast next morning.
The bedroom was a little cool, even with the radiators on, but it was the coldest night of the year so far. To summerise I felt the B&B and cost were a little expensive for thia hotel as it stands, We have stayed in a lot better for less cost. However this hotel has a forward thinking owner, who could make the difference.

Room Tip: Check the shower works, ours did not, but the manager did take £10 off our bill.

“Poor value”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011 via mobile

Avoid this hotel. It is a poor value for a run down place... Needs constant warm water and lots of remodeling. Manager seems to ignore obvious issues...if you want to stay in the area, seek other places

“smelly rooms, cheap sausages”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011 via mobile

I took a single room. There wasn't a smoking/non smoking selection when I booked and I ended up in a room that stank of smoke. The bathroom had other people's hair on the floor. The waiter in the morning was glum and the cheapest possible breakfast was served, esp. The sausages. However it wasn't all bad.. I tried to email some constructive critism rather than a complaint but they weren't really interested cititng it my fault that i got a smoking room.

“Party spoiled the stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

Positives:
Clean, comfortable rooms. Pleasant location and pleasant property. Quirky interior. The beds were particularly comfortable.

Negatives
Breakfast wasn't great, but not bad. Quite pricy (but I think that's the case with anywhere near Oxford, so not property specific). Family rooms above party venue.

We stayed for a weekend break, and our rooms were very comfortable. We chose the property because they welcome dogs and families, and it was clear on our booking that we had a child and a dog.

The problem came on the Saturday night when we returned (2 couples and a 5 year old and a dog). There was a loud party downstairs, when our son wanted to sleep, and he became very agitated due to the noise. We went downstairs to complain, and the manager (knowing that we booked as a family) offered to re-site us to the front of the hotel in a twin room. Although that room smelled somewhat of smoke (being a smoking room), this was a fair compromise for the time being, and when the party finished at midnight, we moved back to our room (our son having fallen asleep after a while).

While we were very unhappy that a family room had been sold directly above a loud party, and we made this clear to the manager, the calm action taken to remedy the situation did resolve it to our satisfaction, and we were able to leave on good terms in the morning. Therefore, some poor planning was remedied by very calm and effective handling of a potentially explosive complaint.

Room Tip: Consider a room at the front of the hotel if there is a function on, as they will be quieter.

“Disappointing and poor value”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

This hotel is generally grubby and neglected. It needs major refurbishment. Lack of cleaning evident in room and ensuite. Unpleasant bedlinen. Uninspiring breakfast (dreadful cheap sausages). A very disappointing stay and poor value.
