“The Otmoor Lodge is the pits.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2010

Two weeks ago with my brother I came into your finely named establishment “The Otmoor Lodge” We wanted to arrange a high quality buffet for our friends and relatives after attending our mother’s funeral. You showed us your standard menu, but we said we would like something better and were willing to pay extra money! We decided that £15 per head would be enough for something a bit special as we have had lovely buffets in the past at your establishment (then under a different name and management) for half that price.

What you gave us was disgraceful and an embarrassment to us, an insult to the memory of our Mother - couple of plates of dried up chicken bits, a couple of plates of pathetic sandwiches, a cheap Pizza, some rock hard and inedible scones and a bunch of bananas! I have had better at a childrens’ party.

We had complaints that it was impossible to ask some members of your staff for anything, be it for a drink, a saucer or even asking for my jacket back because the English language was not understood

“Good base for golf”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 March 2009

The second time we have stayed. Previous reviews a little unfair. Close to excellent Studley Park Golf Club. Food was very pleasant. Room a little basic, but clean and warm. And at £79 ...... The food was most acceptable for around £30 inc wine.

“Incidental hotel, more a restaurant”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2008

Really a restaurant with accommodation. Rooms are out the back, beside the car park, in a purpose-built block. Room was OK but needed some simple maintenance; peeling paint, etc. Adequately clean, bed well used and small, towels threadbare, plumbing noisy but worked well enough. Somewhat musty, clearly not used much. Reminiscent of holiday camp chalets; an aura of good intentions followed by neglect.

Bar area tiny, poor beer selection, no real ale (shame). Bar staff straight off the ferry, tried to serve a "ginger tonic" - no English at all really, had to be rescued by a colleague. Restaurant food rather good, we certainly enjoyed our meal although service was a bit haphazard. Don't order bread - you have to pay for it and you get about three tiny slices for 3 pounds a time. Wine overpriced, but chilled tapwater offered without having to ask. Some of the wine list was "not available" - virtually pot luck?

All the staff appeared to be foreign, with variable English, but they did try, and were quite effective. The chef can certainly cook well. Seemed to be some local trade, rather noisy as the evening wore on.

Overall a curious experience to find in a remote Oxfordshire village; something you would expect to see in a suburban high street really; just doesn't fit in with the surroundings. I suppose it was designed to appeal to second-homers wanting a Putney wine bar at the weekend. Sterile as a result, which is a pity.

Hotel accommodation in the area is very scarce so this is worth considering - but check the room before you pay.

Stayed 2 nights. Dirty unwashed cups on arrival at room. Room unclean. Overcharged on drinks and overcharged on accommodation at check-out. Manager very rude and staff have a language barrier. Would not recommend.
