“Historic, charming and intimate”

Safely parked, my two sisters and I enjoyed a smooth check in for our much anticipated overnight reunion.

We were shown up the stairs to a large deluxe room at the front of the hotel. The room was beautifully decorated, plush, but not at all chintzy - totally in keeping with the rest of the hotel. The room had all the facilities we needed and was tastefully and sympathetically decorated and furnished - essential in a building dating back to the 17th century. At the front we overlooked the walled terrace and at the back our double aspect room orverlooked a small roof terrace which we had access to.

It was a Wednesday so we had the jazz supper menu in the restaurant whilst listening to live jazz playing in the bar. The salmon mousse was light and refreshing, followed by pork belly with roasted winter vegetables and chestnuts for me, my sisters chose the bavette steak which came with salad and chips – they were both thrilled with their choice – ‘fabulous steak’. The waitress helped us in our choice of wine she was efficient and friendly, desserts disappeared.

Breakfast, full English, was divine. The thing that has stayed with me is how relaxed our stay was, how friendly the staff were. We appreciated the warm welcome and in the morning popped off to the Ashmolean and city centre for shopping, all just a 2 minute walk away.

I would definitely recommend the Old Parsonageto anyone who would appreciate relaxing in a luxury, but not too pricey, city hotel.

The check in was akin to a 5* establishment and we were escorted to our room up a narrow twisting staircase with the one room at the top. Fantastic room with lots of character. Everything you would expect from a 4* hotel but with the style and service for a 5* and a more personal touch. We only ate at breakfast and opted for the English option. The ingredients were of top quality and the best black pudding I have had for years! If you are looking for a relaxing break and wish to be treated, then I would recommend this fine establishment.

“Comfort and luxury in Oxford”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

Whenever I visit Oxford, I stay at the Old Parsonage. It is such a welcoming haven and in a central position for all that Oxford has to offer. The rooms offer the most comfortable beds and everything is immaculately clean. The staff are professional and friendly and the food is excellent. The Parsonage is a historical building, full of character. Highly recommended.

“Old World charm, New World service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

A beautiful old building with all the charm you'd hope for.

This is more like a top-drawer guesthouse than an hotel. Don't expect a big lobby, spacious common areas or corridors leading to large rooms with designer bathrooms. Instead, expect lots of steep stairs, wonky walls, low ceilings and had-banging doorways. None of this is a criticism; indeed, many will view it as a reason to go.

The staff were freindly and my room was good - very comfortable bed. The decor is slightly faded, but contemporary furniture and coverings would look out of place. You wouldn't want to spend too much time in the rooms (they're too small for that), but the bar, comfy chairs and fire in the lobby area are inviting. My bathroom was huge, but there's no walk in shower. Instead, its a 'proper' bath with a shower over it.

Nice touches include: free wi-fi, free bottled water and bikes for excursions into town.

I'd certainly rate this as a better experience than the Randoph hotel. If you want a contempoary hotel, try the Malmaison. But, if you want comfortable and charming, this is very good.
