“Perfect Location and the most peaceful stay anywhere!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2012

Probably about 8 rooms in total? Possibly four on ground floor and 4 on first not positive about that though. Separate entrance. There were good points and not so good points about The Ethos.

Good points:
Location - only a ten minute walk from our room
Quiet - situated in a totally residential area, all streets road, terraced, probably student lets but so so quiet!
Beds - Very large and of superior quality - very comfortable and nice 100% cotton linen
TV, SKY and free Wi Fi.

Not so good points or areas for improvement:
A bit more honesty re the parking - on arrival and prior to booking we were told parking no problem at all (I had taken into account previous visitors comments). We were directed to parking literally just around the corner alongside the park - there were restrictions - parking limited to 2 hours only between the hours of 9am and 4pm. As we arrive just before 2pm this did present us with a dilemma whether to leave the car or not before 2pm and walk into town, The hotel suggested we could not problem but I did ask a resident who resided opposite the parking area and he said definately not to risk it as there were parking attendant regularly in the area. We therefore went to a little cafe nearby and sat and have a coffee until 2pm then moved the car. We were then assured that we had a guarantee that we would not reeive a ticket if we were away at 11am the next morning.

Breakfast - there was nothing in our room as other guests had suggested on trip advisor apart from one solitary yoghurt which we guess must have been left by the previous guest, neither was there any mention at check in of breakfast elsewhere.

It is such a lovely space they could do with some floor mats to wupe your fett both on entrance to the property and the rooms - it might save the carpets which in the longer term might get a bit tatty.

All this said - we would use this accommodation again for a one night stay but would not arrive until 2pm then we would not have the worry about the parking. Great to be so near to the city and the peace was just amazing for the quiet.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room no 8 and it was an interconnecting room on the first floor but when we stayed ther...

“Just what we needed!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

Not really knowing Oxford, having not visited before, me and my boyfriend wanted a hotel that was pretty central and that's exactly what we got. The town center is only a 10 minute walk from the hotel, yet it is away from the main roads so very little noise resulting in an excellent sleep! The manager was extremely helpful, directing us into town and pointing out some of his favourite restaurants and bars, which did not dissapoint! Upon arriving we were told our room had been upgraded which was an added bonus. The room was lovely, I can't find anything to complain about. It was very VERY clean and well presented, lovely interior with its own kitchenette, including a toaster, kettle and microwave. The bathroom even had heated flooring! We had a telly with a Sky box and DVD player and there was free wifi for all guests. The only down points would be that there isn't any parking, although the manager does point out where the best street parking is. The second point would be that there wasn't always someone on reception. When we were leaving and wanting to pay for the room there was no one on reception to sort this for us, as we wanted to pay by cash, bearing in mind this was 09.45 am so you would expect someone to be at reception. However, there is a 24 hour number to call if any problems occur which we rang. However, it didn't result in anyone coming to sort us out therefore the money was taken off our card. I cannot comment on breakfast as we did not have it. The breakfast wasn't supplied at the Hotel but at a restaurant just round the corner, it did however look lovely, overlooking the river! I would definitely stay here again!

“Great hotel but not where you expect to find a hotel!”

Apart from not having its own car parking this a great value hotel. The bed is ultra comfortable, staff are very helpful and all sky channels are available . Surprisingly the area the hotel was situated in was very quite and we slept extremely well. My only concern was that we had to leave the car parked in a residential zone with parking time limits however the staff guided us to the best parking areas and at the end of the day we had no parking ticket and enjoyed our weekend in Oxford.

“Different but nice hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

Ethos has very nice rooms indeed, lovely in fact and for that I would come again. It lacks many other facilities and the off the street access was unexpected. but the service was good at check-in and out.

Breakfast was up the road on the edge of the river - lovely view and quite a nice breakfast though rather drowned in olive oil (I had to leave my mushrooms, they were dripping in it!). This may be a temporary arrangement, it's hard to tell.

Parking is also not great, being well away from the hotel, not private - you basically park on the street by a park and the parking runs out at 11:00am (you have 2 hours free from 09:00). Knowing Oxford, it isn't worth taking the chance to go into town and do some shopping when your car is there, you could easily get a ticket and the hotel would be able to do nothing about that.

The average rating is because we booked the hotel as a group well in advance and we said we wanted parking, and they said no problem, they didn't tell us either about breakfast being up the road (it was a nice short stroll though, as it wasn't bucketing down with rain).

Apart from that I would recommend it.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms are ground floor street-side and literally with your curtains open people walk pas...
