“Lovely building”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Well, we went there for my husbands birthday and we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived to see how lovely The Red Lion itself was. However when we entered the hotel we were expecting the staff to be dressed accordingly. I was not happy with the temperature of the water in the room as we had to have cold showers the room was very cold. We did complain and a man cameto the room but unfortuantely he wasnt dressed in a uniform and he couldnt speak english very well and we thought he was a hotel guest. The food was edible but everything came with rocket salad which we do like but found it very amusing. I think if you are an American or any kind of tourist you will be disappointed with the standard of staff. But the hotel is lovely and could be run so much better if I was in charge. They do need uniforms and old fashioned english staff to keep in line with the hotel. The hotel needs a little facelift and new hairdryers. We did have a lovely time but we would of been disappointed if we had paid full price. We didnt expect alot after reading trip advisor and some comments were true but the staff are friendly and the food is edible. We stayed in room 209 which had lovely views but was eerily cold.

“NICE OLD HOTEL”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

In a very good location right next to the River Thames. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We were assigned a lovely room (209) overlooking the river....The room was well appointed but the toilet seat did not fit and the shower head needed a good clean.....The dinner menu was not very inspiring as was the cooking, there was very little atmosphere....We had a good deal via Groupon but felt it would not worth the normal price.

“A good overnight stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We took advantage of a Groupon deal to stay overnight while visiting the area. No problems booking the date we required; they were even happy to allow us to use our voucher beyond the expiry date so it would coincide with our plans. However, this was not necessary. Arrived mid afternoon and were met with a pleasant and friendly welcome. Our room (101) was in the older part of the hotel - four poster, exposed beams etc. Small bathroom but ample for our needs. However, the hair-dryer was missing the hose. Informed the reception and they immediately found us another room (103). This was again a four-poster room, brighter, slightly larger and again "overlooking" the church. Quite happy with this. Took pre-dinner drinks in the bar and then dinner in he restaurant. Dinner was a set menu with about 5 to 6 choices for each course. Something for most people. Enjoyed the food, not fine dining, but not pretending to be. Quite happy with the quantity and quality. Took coffee in the cosy lounge.
Breakfast was buffet style and a reasonable choice. Downside was the tea-coffee. Flask of "hot" water and a flask of coffee! At least have boiling water to make tea!
We also noticed as others have stated, the water was tepid in the room and the heating occassionally cool. Get a new shower head, current one in room does not spray!
Overall, the staff were excellent and friendly and made us most welcome. Would happily return.

Room Tip: Ask to have a look at the room first if possible. Rooms opposite the church are quiet.

“Fawlty Towers – New Series discovered!”

Our weekend at the Red Lion would have been comical if it hadn’t been such a disaster. We bought a voucher via Groupon that included dinner bed and breakfast for 2. What it didn’t include was hot water or reliable central heating. That said, those items that were included were a disaster; room (broken windows with a constant draft), inedible dinner (Oriental warm beef salad, which was neither warm nor Oriental) and keeping the piece de résistance until last, breakfast. What a fiasco; no tables, no coffee, no food – sorry that last point is a little uncharitable – raw sausage and I mean raw!

The problem with this place is that it’s understaffed and poorly managed. In fairness we were given a full refund, as were all the other guests that complained. Thankfully, I was able to capture some of the experience on my phone.

Finally, a word on Groupon. I cannot believe that anyone from that organisation could have stepped foot in the Red Lion but they damn well should if they are going to promote these things. Just goes to show that the old adage is correct “if it seems too good to be true it probably is”. Maybe not on reflection, the whole experience was priceless!

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere

“Enjoyable weekend break.”

We took advantage of a Groupon deal and paid a little extra for an upgrade and another night. It's centrally located for both the town and the river and we were in Room 108 overlooking the river. Lovely room with four-poster bed. The only "negatives" about the room were the (really) creakly floorboards (!) and that it's right on the junction and despite the double glazing there is quite a bit of road noise.

The staff were accommodating and a special thank you to Jo, Preeti and Kosh. We had a nice meal on the Friday night and Jo bought us a surprise bottle of champagne into the lovely lounge to help us celebrate our engagement :o)

The hotel is decorated to a high standard and has some lovely features and pieces of furniture. There was a King Charles crest above the fireplace in our room which was fascinating.

Unfortunately there was a problem with the water/heating on early Saturday evening and there were no hot water. Despite being promised this would be sorted within 15 minutes after a call downstairs, there was no hot water all evening and it was only tepid in the morning. Disappointing. But apart from that, we had a lovely weekend at the Red Lion. Thank you.
