This is for the restaurant only as we have not stayed there (we are fairly local)
We were looking forward to trying the restaurant, but it was a big let-down. Despite the fact that there was only 1 other couple there, it took 40 minutes from placing the order for our food to arrive. The plates were cold and so were my carrots. I pointed this out to the single waiter/bar person, and he did bring some more....but by the time he did I'd almost finished my main course. The potatoes were tepid but at least the chicken was hot (although very short of the stilton that was supposed to be in the middle!) My partner chose belly pork, and got one tiny piece, not even as big as a pork chop.
We had to ask to see the dessert menu and what we were given was a list of about 5 boring looking puddings (apple crumble, toffee pudding etc- you know, the sort of thing you can pick up in the supermarket) scribbled in biro on a scrap of paper. We declined. We were not offered coffee or anything else.
The wine by the glass was reasonable quality (not great, but fine, albeit a bit pricey), but the fruit juce from a jug was obviously supermarket own brand quality. We observed that the bar was poorly stocked, which we note other people have commented on.
It took one and 3/4 hours therefore to eat one disappointing main course. It's a pity because the dining room was pleasant and warm with a nice atmosphere. For what we got we think it was way over priced. The young man serving was pleasant enough, but in no way was he either speedy or pro-active - he should watch "Michael Roux's Service" on BBC2 for some ideas. This place seems to us to be run on a shoe string, and it shows. Sorry, but could not recommend - we won't be going back.
