“Disappointing Food”

We didn't stay in the hotel so cannot comment on the rooms etc but we did stop here for Sunday lunch last weekend whilst on our way to Ross on Wye. The service was friendly and welcoming but the food was very, very disappointing. My wife's meal (lamb) was swimming in far too much gravy and not very pleasant whilst my burger tasted of nothing but heat - although the chips were OK! We will not be stopping here again and, on the way back, chose to stop instead at The Fox Inn in nearby Great Barrington. Vastly superior.

“nice hotel in nice village”

Had 1 night here in May 2011. The car park was sizeable, no probs parking. Location was about 100-200m from the top of the long hill which is the main road that runs through Burford. Got there quite late so decided to sue the restaurant in the hotel, which was very good. Not a cheap hotel, but the building is old and has quite a bit of character. Best way to describe it is a quite upmarket inn/restaurant on the edge of a pretty Cotswolds village. Was on a main road which was quite busy but didn't notice any noise in our room. The traffic through Burford itself does spoil it slightly (not sure why they don't divert traffic on a bypass), otherwise I think it would quite easily be the Cotswolds villages.

“Very disappointing”

It was a bad sign when there was no one on Reception and I had to wait for about 10 minutes before the one overworked waitress could come and help us check in. The whole place was dingy and unwelcoming. The rooms were adequate though not worth the money that was charged. Barely anyone ate dinner that night in the restaurant so there was no atmosphere and one certainly had the impression that quality was not the priority. However the worst part was saved for breakfast. The poor over stretched waitress did not seem to realise that to come down to breakfast and find the jug of milk and the jug of orange juice were both empty, one yoghurt on the buffet table and not much else was unbelievable - the worst buffet breakfast I have ever seen. The cooked breakfasts were better for those who wanted them. Bog standard sliced toast - expected better considering the price. I would not recommend this hotel at all.

“Boutique hotel prices but hostel standard. Stay elsewhere - very poor experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2011

We stayed in the Burford Lodge for a weekend with our young children, staying in the family room. We were very disappointed with the experience, and would not recommend it.

First, the room itself left much to be desired. It was very dusty and the cleaning had been patchy (we found some grime in the bath, for example). I agree with other reviews which describes the decor as 'tired' and we also had a very old (1980s?) and small TV.

Second, they do not have the facilities for babies. If staying, bring your own travel cot. A travel cot had been provided for our baby, as requested, but there was no mattress and instead a duvet and pillow (for a 2-month old!) had been placed in it. Obviously we removed the pillow but we had to use the duvet as a mattress in the circumstances, which was worrying.

Third, the room was not cleaned/ made up after our first night there. We complained about this and the staff did take money off our bill.

Fourth, the hotel website advertises itself as having 'free wi-fi' in all rooms. This is inaccurate. There is wi-fi in the hotel but there was no coverage in our room. I ended up having to sit on the stairs, by the fire exit, to work overnight as the bar area was locked and this was the only accessible place I could find with wi-fi acces.

On the positive side, the staff were very friendly and helpful. Also, when we raised the problems they did apologise and reduced our bill. The breakfast was good and I do not agree with the reviews which are critical of the food.

However, the standard of accommodation was very poor and the hotel is massively overpriced for what you get. I appreciate the Cotswolds location inevitably means prices go up but there seems to be far better value, and a better standard, in various locations in Burford village itself.

“A very mixed experience - much work needed.”

The front of this hotel is 10 meters from the A40 and is noisy. All the more so as there is no double glazing in the bedroom windows. We said no to the bedroom we were shown because of the road noise. We accepted one at the back which was quieter. If we had not been so tired, we would have found another hotel. The bedroom was small and shabbily furnished and decorated. The hotel know there is work to be done and had reduced the price to £70 ( from £110). The shower was faulty, the bathroom extractor fan did not work, the TV/DVD would not play DVD and only received 3 channels, no radio, the double bed was small and hard, with a winter weight Duvet. The staff were lovely and kept apologising. The food was home cooked and good, the breakfast fine and the staff very friendly. I would need to see photos of the bedrooms after upgrading before I went again.

Room Tip: Get one at the back
