“No room at the Inn”

I booked to stay at this hotel online a day before traveling from Scotland. This hotel is next to an IVF clinic and it is common for patients to stay there to be close to the clinic the next morning for procedures. We had eaten in the hotel on previous visits (very average) and thought it looked ok. When I made the booking it advised I would be charged if I did not turn up.

I drove from Scotland after work and arrived at the hotel around 11pm. When I arrived I was told they had no rooms. I asked why they could not have phoned me to advise of this prior to me setting off from Glasgow and it became obvious they have a policy of overselling rooms and hoping everyone doesn't turn up. If you don't turn up, I am very sure they will still take your money, for a room they have sold to someone else. At the time of booking, there was nothing to say you should phone ahead if you would arrive after a certain time.

I asked to stay anywhere in the hotel; even a conference room with a sheet and was told this was not possible. All we were offered was a twin room at a hotel half an hour away for which we would need to pay £100 - not even offered free of charge for our hassle. I explained that I had paid to stay at that hotel when it was the most expensive in the area to ensure I was closeby for my procedure early the next day, embarrassed to give any personal info but hoping it might make them try a bit harder. I could have found a cheaper hotel must closer than that myself. The bar would not sell us any food as we did not have a room, and due to getting surgery next day, I wasn't allowed to eat anything after midnight so had nothing to eat that night. Eventually, when we had no choice but to go to the other much more basic hotel we were told this is an arrangement these hotels have between them and rooms are indeed oversold. I got to bed at 1.30 and had to leave the hotel at 6.30 to be sure I got to where I had to be in time.

To make matters worse, someone came in after we did and got a room at the hotel. They did not want to give them a key in front of us until I insisted they didn't inconvenience them because of us. Apparently, this was because this gentleman had the foresight to phone earlier that day to ensure his room was kept for him. I wrote to QHotels to complain about this and received no reply, but have received much junk mail giving me offers for their hotels. I would never stay in any of their hotels after the way we were treated. When I asked to speak to someone in charge at the time all of the staff were really young and no proper manager was present that night or the next day. I have taken so long to write this as was too upset at the time and have received yet more junk mail from this company.

If you do decide to stay at this hotel, make sure you phone on the day and get confirmation of your room.

Dear Guest,
I was very concerned to read your review particularly due to the fact that this all happened nearly one year ago. It is obviously difficult for me to look into the details with it being so long ago, however I will do all I can to restore your faith in The Nottingham Belfry and Q Hotels. Please do contact me so that we can look into the matter for you as well as remove you from the mailing list that you speak of.
Yours sincerely,

“Lovely weekend break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Stayed at the Belfry Friday to Sunday on a Spa package, a family of 4. We had a great stay a this hotel and received a very warm welcome. Our rooms were clean, spacious and the walk in shower was a plus. The hotel restaurant is absolutely lovely from the wonderful food to the ambiance. We would like to thank all the staff, Reception, bar and restaurant and a very special thank you to Yvonne, who went out of her way to make us feel welcome. Nothing was too much trouble which made our stay special. It was also our daughters 21st birthday whilst we were there and was given a cocktail and a special desert which made her day. The spa treatments were also brilliant, the best we have ever had!

On the Saturday we used the "Park and Ride" which is only 5 mins drive from the hotel and got the tram into Nottingham to do some shopping. We found this very easy to do and getting on and off the tram with a wheelchair was no trouble at all.

Great relaxing weekend, the only downside was it went too quick!!

“Quantity of customers over quality of service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We stay in quite a lot of four star hotels around the country, on Saturday nights but won't be staying at Nottingham Belfry again!

Good points (must start with the positive)- well-kept hotel, modern appearance, plenty of parking, easy to find, pleasant staff, eventually upgraded to superior room (not a lot of difference compared to the standard though). Reasonable if unimaginative breakfast. Clean modern pool area.

Bad points (few more of these than the good ones)
-long slow-moving check-in queue- only two members of staff on the desk.
-Huge queue with long wait for breakfast in the morning- the restaurant is too small.
-Many of the breakfast items were all empty/nearly empty in the middle of the breakfast service period. There was a fried egg pan and eggs in their shells but no chef to do the necessary cooking and none ready cooked. The cooked food was lukewarm, especially from a second temporary area with only small burners under each tray.
-Cheap plain sausages despite the menu's claim of pork and herb.
-Given a twin despite booking a double- very romantic for our Valentines' break! No spare double rooms so staff offered to zip the beds together and re-make- this didn't happen. Ended up moving all our stuff to a cancellation superior double room at 9pm when we came back from dinner- again, didn't really set the mood.
-The "towels provided" at the pool were not in evidence. Nor were the staff to ask. Hence a cold, wet wander around to find someone after our swim. The guy's catchphrase seemed to be "not a problem"- it was to us!
-Spa pool in name only- I think we counted four jets in the hot tub. Warm bath might be a better description. Steam room with moulded plastic benches- very opulent, I think not.

Conclusion- I get the feeling that the hotel was almost fully booked but that insufficient extra service provision had been made to accomodate the number of guests. We have stayed in other four star hotels, paid half of the £119 rate at the Belfry and recieved more efficient service, nicer facilities and a much more satisfying stay.

Room Tip: Superior rooms have an extra chair and table, a large vase, bathrobe, nicer teabags and a different...

“A fantastically, relaxing experience!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012 via mobile

Stayed at the hotel for one night on Friday the 10th of Feb. The staff are extremely friendly and make you feel like royalty! In particular, the meal time staff and the lovely young lady who did my massage in the spa - I wish I remember her name! The rooms were lovely and just the whole experience was luxurious! The only and only negative point was that I had the breakfast in bed included in my package. As much as the service was perfect, it was only luke warm and therefore a little disappointing. But on the whole, is give the stay a 9 and of 10! Thank you very much!!!
