“A really lovely stay”

We booked this hotel as a Groupon deal and didn't have a clue what to expect, especially having read some of the more negative reviews. But - we were very pleasantly surprised. The hotel enjoys a central location in Nottingham. The rooms are quite small, it's true - however they are warm and cosy and have everything one could need, including decent mattresses, clean bedding, plentiful supplies of teabags, biscuits etc and - joy of joys - a lovely deep bath. The hotel staff are very friendly and can't do enough for you. The food and the service was of a high standard and we would not hesitate to use this hotel again.

Room Tip: Perhaps one at the back away from the main, noisy road (we had 213, which was extremely quiet and no...

“Extremely pleasant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Have just returned from a night at this hotel. Wonderful service, food excellent and staff could not do enough for you. Rooms adaquate and very clean as was the bathroom. Loads of tea and coffee sachets. We would have no hesitation recommending this hotel. Check the size of your room before going as some can be quite small. Central position.

Room Tip: Make sure you check the size of your room before going.

“Overnighter”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

Was in Nottingham on business and my very large group forgot to reserve me a room in the hotel they had arranged to stay in so I was booked into the Strathdon at 3 hours notice. My meeting was less than 5 minutes walk away from the hotel and it was quite easy to find. Not travelling by car I can't comment on how easy to park nearby is but Nottingham isn't the easiest places to drive and park in.

The receptionist was very friendly and helpful and explained that you had to leave the key at reception before going out and pick it up on return. Returning later to the hotel he remembered me and handed the keys over without having to state which room.

The hotel isn’t brand new and does look like a 60s/70s build and its not an architectural beauty that would have Prince Charles singing its praises but I only staying the night to sleep not look at the building.

Again rooms aren't huge but were spotless (though hall did have a slight smell of smoke) Bathroom clean as was the bath and shower curtain. The toilet flush must have been linked to a small reservoir as it ran for quite some time. Toiletries were provided and the sea-kelp shampoo very nice!

The bed was comfortable and even had a hairdryer, iron and ironing board along with extra pillow and blankets. TV was wall mounted and had the full Freeview services so plenty of radio to listen too.

Breakfast was good and hot, though the first pot of coffee could have done with being a little warmer. I was on my own in the breakfast room from 7:30 and the young waitress didn’t look old enough to be out that early let alone working!

Was it a stately home with wonderful garden? No.

Was it a reasonable priced city centre (and it doesn’t get to much centre than this, for a comfortable nights sleep. Yes.

“An ok place to spend the night”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

The hotel is rather dated and the elevator in it is very small barely being able to fit one person with a bag . The room was rather small as well but at least clean and tidy . The reception stuff was very friendly and helpful . An average place suitable for a short stay period. The free wi-fi was extremely slow as well which made staying in the room for more than just sleeping impossible.

“Dishonest housekeeping???????? What other explanation?????”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

A 2night stay here could have been so much better & the restaurant ‘niggles’ could well have been over looked if an item of clothing had not disappeared from our wardrobe!!
We checked in on the evening of Fri 13th, the receptionist was friendly & helpful giving us directions to Talbot St car park, we left our baggage & went off to park the car. Back to the hotel & we were in room 601, a huge room on the top floor (note that the lift only goes to the 5th floor so we had to carry our baggage up one level of stairs). The room had all the usual amenities plus a sofa & coffee table – a nice touch is the wall mounted TV which could be directed towards the bed or the sofa.
We were booked into the restaurant at 8pm, chose our meals & gave the member of staff our order, unfortunately there was some mix up & we waited nearly an hour for our starter - an apology was given & the meal was tasty.
Breakfast the next morning was a complete disaster – one member of staff doing everything, the poor lad (Alex) was running back & forth at brake neck speed to try & keep all the guests happy, however, he didn’t stand a chance, there was no way that he could complete all the tasks – clear tables, serve tea, coffee & toast, fill up the hot food & replace the juices & cold food!!! We waited nearly half an hour just for the hot food. We spoke to the Duty Manager Abi & she apologised & said that they were short staffed & hoped that they would be able to offer a better service at dinner & breakfast the following morning.
The hotel, as previously mentioned is in the city centre & a short walk soon gets you in the shopping area, where we spent the morning & then the afternoon exploring the castle. Back to the hotel for a rest, then shower & change for dinner……………………………………..until I discovered that the top that I had quickly hung up as soon as we’d arrived the previous evening (because I didn’t want it to crease) was missing from the wardrobe!!! Of course both myself & husband then checked all over the room – had I left it in the suitcase? No, I remember hanging it up! Had my husband placed an item of clothing over it? No, there were plenty of spare coathangers – we were only staying 2nights so had only taken 2 changes of clothes!
I immediately contacted the Duty Manager (Alex) who said he was unable to comment as only the Duty Manager & housekeeping had keys & as housekeeping had left for the day. He said he would speak to housekeeping the following morning.
The restaurant service was faultless for dinner that night & indeed breakfast the following morning.
Alex spoke to us as we checked out & advised that the person he needed to speak to wasn’t on duty, so he took our contacted details & said he’d be in touch.
What could have been an enjoyable weekend has been completely marred by this theft – whether it be a member of staff or guest (although no signs of damage to the door which automatically locks on closing).
Where ever we stay, we always leave no valuables in our hotel room – but clothing? What are guests expected to do? My top wasn’t an expensive item, but was obviously very easy to hide & had I have worn it on the first evening I wouldn’t have noticed it missing until we’d returned home by which time I’d have thought it was me who’d left it in the room!
I now wait to hear from the hotel.
