“Relaxing Break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

Just spent a week at Thoresby Hall as part of birthday celebrations. Second time here. This time we had a Signature Plus room which was lovely. Spacious, comfortable and exceptionally clean. It was some way from Reception, but that suited us, as we prefer to be away from any potential noise ( usually due to inconsiderate guests rather than any problem with the hotel). The food in the main restaurant was adequate, given the large numbers catered for, but we preferred to order from the a la carte menu . Special mention should be made of the young man who cooked the stir fries each night as he did a wonderful job of it - especially given the fussy nature of some of the guests!
We had our last nights meal in the Blue Room restaurant, which was superb. I know some people thought the portions were too small, but we found there was plenty to eat, and came away feeling very full
The entertainment crew were excellent as always, but we were slightly disappointed by the resident band this time, as we are keen ballroom dancers and often found the music played unsuitable to dance to. The afternoon social dances were very welcome, and gave us a chance to practice
We used the swimming pool every day and found the facilities adequate, although the dryer ( for drying swimming costumes) was broken in the Ladies changing rooms for the whole week we were there - a minor inconvenience as the one in the spa changing rooms was made available for use
Used the free wifi while we were there and the connection was very simple and quick in all the public areas
All in all, a great break. Will probably book another break for later in the year at a different hotel

Room Tip: Unless you have mobility problems choose one away from Reception

“needs some tlc/ noisy room”

Just spent a lovely weekend at Thoresby Hall. We have been to several other Warners hotels.
Booked a standard room which was tastefully decorated and quite spacious. However we were
disturbed during the night by staff in the room above coming and going at all hours- complained to the reception who said they'd sort it out, but ended up seeing the manager after a 2nd night of disturbance- he agreed that this room should not be used for guests (RM103). He moved us to another room miles away from anything else which was ok, but as inthe 1st room the shower head needed replacing the shower was really poor. Restaurant meals were reasonable but every table we sat at seemed there to be lose and the wine chiller stands were
loose. t seems there needs to be some maintenance of tables and bathrooms.
Entertainment was good, but by sunday night it all seemed very sameish. We are in our 40s/50's and felt very young compared with others staying there.

Room Tip: Not room 103 if standard, noise from staff room above.

“Good but not great”

We have been to other Warner hotels in the past and thought that we knew roughly what to expect from our weekend break. Check in at reception was quick and efficient and the issue of a "charge card" to be settled on checking out was a good idea. There were 20 in our party. We had booked standard rooms which are in the modern annexe which is attached to the main building. Our bedroom was of a good size, well furnished and overlooking a garden with peacocks and bird feeders, very pleasant. The bathroom was large and well equipped and everything was very clean. Only two small moans, the "double bed" was two singles pushed together which had a tendancy to separate and the shower over the bath had a very flimsy curtain which formed a second skin when you took a shower (one of my pet hates). The room was situated a considerable distance from reception, the dining rooms and entertainment areas through a maze of corridors. This was not a problem for us but could be for someone who is less mobile.

Because of the size of our party we were allocated a room adjoining the main dining room for our meals which was very convenient and much appreciated. The evening meals and breakfasts were generally of a good standard bearing in mind the variety on offer and the number of people to be fed. Some items were a little dissapointing but others made up for it and there was no reason why anyone should leave feeling hungry. The self service approach to a lot of the dishes made the experience a little like school dinners at times but in fairness given the range of dishes on offer it would be impossible to provide waiter service for more than the few which they do.

We were out and about during the day and therefore didn't have a chance to use the pool and other facilities which I understand are very good. We did use the snooker table and dart board however. The evening entertainment provide by the young and enthusiastic resident team was very good but it was a shame that on the Friday and Saturday evenings there were not enough seats to go round in the main theatre. I understand that non residents are allowed in and this may account for the problem. The entertainment area is well away from the bedrooms which means that there should be no problem with folk being kept awake until the early hours.

The cost of the wine and drinks we felt were on the high side and the average age of the other guests seemed to be considerably higher than ours which seemed to have a negative effect on the overall atmosphere at times. Having said this the type of break on offer is what you make it and our group had fun. I fear that a younger couple on their own may have felt dissapointed at times.

The main house is very grand and the public rooms impressive. Warners have preserved a fine building by turning it into a hotel and the overall experience is a good one. There will always be room for improvement given the numbers that they are catering for but they have found their market and serve it well. We had an excellent deal in terms of cost as, I suspect, did everyone else there but the rates charged for rooms and meals shown in reception would be far more than I for one would be prepared to pay.

“Not the best New Years break”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

We thoroughly enjoy Thoresby Hall and having visited 3 times we decided to book a 2 night from break 31st Dec - 2nd Jan, as there were no Historic Rooms available upgraded to a Signature Room. The confirmation said restaurant reservations were required for all evening meals and that someone would contact us, after 2 calls to the hotel eventually we were contacted 2 days before New Years Eve needless to say restaurants and times were extremely limited (not a great start). Our Signature room was ok but the carpet was covered in green glitter (possibly from a previous occupant) not good when you are both wearing black!, the bathroom was clean but dated and the shower certainly wasn't a power one in my opinion, no mini bar as advertised in the brochure. We arrived at the Pierrepont for dinner and made our selection the staff were not particularly attentive and it took 4 requests just to get some water! we noticed some butter on the table but no one seemed to know why as there was no bread rolls offered nor cheese & biscuits on the menu! Even though the tables had crackers, hats, etc there appeared to be very little festive atmosphere around. After dinner we sat in the Great Hall and after talking to others it became obvious we weren't the only ones to be a little disappointed. The Pavillion Bar was crowded as was the dance floor as12.00 approached but it still seemed as if something was lacking in the atmosphere.

Breakfast was served until late which was nice and the atmosphere was happy and relaxed, we took part in the activities which were fun and the day was very well organised. We paid an extra supplement for a meal in the Blue Room that evening (included if you stay in Historic Rooms) unfortunately it seems to have lost something of the quality we had come to expect and enjoyed on previous visits, the menu was mediocre, the food average, the staff whilst attentive looked as if they wanted to be anywhere but there!

The average age must have been 70+ and we met a number of people booking for New Year 2012/2013, who have been coming at Christmas/New Year some over 15 years!, staff even call them by their first names (a very nice touch). We are in our 50's, and are used to celebrating New Year somewhere with elegance, style, atmosphere and service unfortunately we did not find this at Thoresby Hall.

Room Tip: Standard Rooms are more than adequate, but if you want something really special opt for an Historic...

Thoresby Hall Hotel was very good. plenty to do but if you wanted to relax you could do that too. Plenty of entertainment day and evening. The only thing that spoilt it was the food. very bland and barley warm.

Room Tip: we choose the ground floor because we dont like stairs but alll the rooms looked good.
