Have just spent a week at The Stables, which is now self catering. The accomodation was excellent, two large bedrooms - both with ensuite bathrooms, dining area and cosy lounge. We went with grown-up son & partner so there wasn't any arguing over who was having the better bedroom. Everything in the cottage was pristine and to a high standard. Bardon Mill is ideally placed for visiting Hadrian's Wall and its many attractions; Vindolanda and Walltown are only a short drive away and the area has many pubs which serve food (although quite a few did close or do not do food on Monday). Bardon Mill makes an excellent base with or without a car. It is served by the Newcastle to Carlisle train and buses. The only downside was much to my son's dismay, it has been too warm to light the inglenook fire! Definitely worth a visit.
