“Excellent, relaxing place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2011

This was our second visit to Carrow B & B and we have booked to stay there again next year. Everything is perfect for a relaxing stay, from the warm welcome to the lovely rooms with the fantastic views. The breakfast choice is first class and delicious. Kevin and Leah are excellent hosts. This is the perfect place to stay if you are walking along Hadrian's Wall or just exploring the beautiful surrounding area and towns such as Hexham. The Red Lion in a nearby village is good for an evening meal.

“Excellent B&B, great location for Hadrian's Wall”

We stayed at Carraw B&B in August for three nights. The room was excellent, had everything you needed and the breakfasts were very tasty! If you are wanting to explore the Northumberland countryside then this is in a great location for Hadrian's wall walking. The B&B also has a guest lounge where you can go and relax and look at the wide range of maps/leaflets etc. We had a lovely stay and would return.

“A really lovely place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2011

Carraw is ideally placed for exploring the Northumbrian countryside and Hadrian's Wall in particular. The room was fabulous - spacious, clean, tasteful, comfortable, with amazing views, even from the bath. Breakfast was excellent and the whole ambiance was friendly and welcoming.

“Lovely B&B for walkers or wedding goers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2011

We recently stayed at the Carraw B&B as we were visiting the area for a wedding at Langley Castle which is about a 15 minute taxi ride away from the accomodation.

The setting of the B&B is really amazing, right out in the middle of the countryside with beautiful views of the surrounding green hills and farmland. To get there you have to drive along some very long and straight roman roads with the odd "Severe Dip" warning sign - and they really are severe dips, oncoming cars literally disappear from view for a few seconds and then reappear just in front of you! The road largely follows Hadrians Wall which, even from a distance, is quite an impressive site and obviously a draw for walkers from around the world. We met a very nice couple from Germany at Carraw who were in the middle of a 3 week trek walking the length of the wall and some coastal paths as well; we however only had the morning before the wedding to explore so did a quick stint along the wall west from Housesteads (apparently a good bit of wall).

The B&B itself is a lovely building, a restored farm house with historic touches (beams etc) but a nice clean feel. The rooms were a good size, not huge but big enough for a couple of days, the bathroom was very smart with an excellent shower. Homemade biscuits to go with your tea/coffee in the room were a nice touch. We were also given keys for a separate entrance to our part of the building which was very handy when coming back late from the wedding. Breakfast was excellent with local produce and a friendly smile to serve, although really my only criticism of Carraw is that with a weekday window of 7.30 to 8.30am for breakfast, and an extension to 9am at the weekend, this was a little on the early side (perfect for some walkers I'm sure!)

Leah, one of the owners, was very friendly, chatty and knowledgeable of the area which really enhanced our experience. I would definitely reccommend Carraw to anyone staying in the Hexham area for a couple of days.

“Professionally run B&B in an excellent location along Hadrian’s Wall”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2011

We only stayed one night here at the end of our holiday, but it was beautifully kept, with lovely views and a great location. I wish we could have spent longer exploring the region, but this provided a wonderful taster of Hadrian’s Wall country. And speaking of taste, the breakfast was very good, with a large selection available.

The B&B itself was immaculate; I don't know how they kept everything so clean with hikers coming and going, but the rooms and public areas were pristine. The lounge was a perfect place to get information about the area, and contains a DVD library and TV: I imagine it would be a lovely retreat if the weather turns rough (we were also told you could take DVDs back to your room).

The room we were in (Brocolitia) was enormous: a giant king-size bed and a twin. The bathroom was also large, and I loved that they provided a range of towel sizes (a giant one for the body and a small one for wrapping hair after a shower – perfection!), and they also included face clothes.

The location is perfect for seeing the central bit of Hadrian’s Wall. Vindolanda and Chesters are nearby, as are the ruins of Housesteads (we had a beautiful climb there at sunrise) and the temple of Brocolitia. Slightly further a-field are the National Trust sites of Cragside and Wallington. Both are definitely worth a visit, and you could easily spend a day at each.

Room Tip: Brocolitia is enormous and would be perfect for a family; not sure what other rooms are like.
