“Had intended putting up relatives here.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

As in the title is was intended to suggest to friends and relatives they stay here while attending a family wedding in the area (Oct '11) so we went to see what it was like. General appearance left little doubt the place was tired and bit drab although relatively clean, staff seemed pleasant enough and gave us all the info we asked for. we then decided to have a meal to 'test the water'

After a long wait 40+mins (there were only 8 people in total in the place and not all of them were there to eat) the food arrived, the steak in ale pie filling was so dry that it stuck firmly to the equally dry pastry top, it was served with soggy chips (that I suspected were reheated to luke warm from lunchtime left overs), the other meal of chicken, which to be honest was luke warm and also very dry with the 'sauce' being congealed and tasteless, went barely touched. Next table to us was served a snack but I noticed that came with a salad garnish consisting of discoloured wilted lettuce and judging by the amount of chips left on the plate when the man had finished I can only assume they were as unpalatable as those we were served.

We got chatting with a couple who were currently staying there and of course we asked their opinion..the reply was quick to the tongue and very heavy with the advice......don't let them stay here!!

Shame really as it has some spectacular views going for it and I suspect if they could be bothered to take a long hard look at what is coming out of the kitchen and find staff that CAN ACTUALLY cook they would have a very well situated business with bags of potential to double turnover.

“Loves to rip off pensioners”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

Very disappointing Sunday lunch - food lukewarm and badly prepared, vegetables raw. Dining room was freezing (no heating at all despite the fact it's December; we all had to leave our coats on) and dark. Very variable portion size, presumably depending on whatever they were running out of in the kitchen. Avoid the mince and dumplings like the plague - a giant bowl of congealed cold mince with one dumpling in the middle! Service indifferent and surroundings extremely run down, grubby and shabby. If lunch hadn't been a Christmas 'treat' from our elderly parents we would have refused to pay (or even sit there to start with). Clearly only still going on the basis it has a great view of the countryside and pensioners (the main clientel) don't bother to complain.

Room Tip: Didn't stay in the hotel but based on restaurant wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

“Top Place for Fishermen to stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2011

Stayed there again last night after a day's salmon fishing on The River (North) tyne. Simple accommodastion; great staff and food was great. The Steak & Ale Pie is a 'must'.
Staff are very cheery and helpful. Great bar; plenty of locals to offer opinions on fishing.
Good price; jumbo breakfast; thermos filled and a hearty 'Cherio' as we left.
we will return!

Room Tip: After a long day's fishing all the rooms are good!!!

“OK but not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2011

Rather picturesque from the outside but fairly traditional and tired décor inside. The welcome at the bar was friendly. The bedrooms were reasonable, if again, a bit tired and traditional. The weakest point was the bathroom. A totally ineffective shower over the bath, soap only available via wall mounted packs in odd places, and an overall bare, Spartan feel.

Some road noise over night. Breakfast was reasonable, but the mushrooms looked deep fried.

“Worst stay on the wall”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2011

We were allocated to stay in the bungalow which upon first appearance looked good - however we missed the clue that there was a dehumidifier running and the room did not have central heating .We arrived wet and departed still damp
The beds were damp and cold and even with the heaters provided had little effect on the persistent damp
There were a few other little niggles too such as the shower gel dispenser was empty and no spoon was provided with the drink making kit
The evening meal in the adjacent pub was of a high standard but was quite expensive compared to others we experienced whilst walking the wall
I would not recommend these premises

Room Tip: Refuse the adjacent bungalow
