“Lovely deluxe hotel. A nice escape.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

We have stayed at Slaley Hall several times over the last 10 years. It has recently had a refurb in some areas. The hotel itself is lovely, meals are divine, espec the breakfasts. Most of the staff are very pleasant and helpful. The bedrooms are warm, quiet and cosy. My most recent visit was mid january, the time before that when we stayed we did use the pool etc but found it very dated and a bit dirty and desp in need of the refurb, chipped tiles, mucky areas around the tiles. We got there late this time so didnt get chance to check if this actually had the refurb. I really do hope so because it did let the hotel down.
I would recommend a visit but I also strongly recommend you double check your bill before you checkout, they do forget to remove things which are included in packages and charge things twice, we have this happen a couple of times. Was rectified after speaking to staff/managers but should not happen in the first place.
All in all, a nice hotel.

Room Tip: ask for a deluxe, they are worth it

Dear Belllo,

Thank you very much for your review. I’m delighted that you continue to enjoy your visits to Slaley Hall and very grateful for the time you’ve taken to share your experiences.

It’s a shame that you didn’t get a chance to use the leisure facilities this time round as we’ve undertaken a considerable amount of work during the last year or so to make improvements. I’m certain that next time you stay you’ll enjoy them even more.

I’m sorry that you’ve experience problems in the past with your account. I’m sure that these have been unfortunate and highly irregular issues and feel confident that we’ve overcome whatever problems existed in the past with our billing system.

Please do let me know next time you’re visiting as I would love to personally welcome you back to Slaley Hall.

Yours sincerely,

Sean Boyce

“Excellent”

My Husband, daughter and i stayed here for 1 night and we really did have an enjoyable stay.We arrived early, had a light lunch, service was friendly and efficient, with sandwiches, burgers and salads on the menu.
We were given an early check in, the reception team friendy, ensuring we had dinner reservations made and information on services advised.
Valet parking was offered, which pleased my husband and he very happily accepted the offer.
The room was clean, a good size and well maintained with a super kingsize bed and a golf view.
We took our Daughter for a swim, which she enjoyed, the pool was a little cold, there is a small sauna and steam room and a small jacuzzi, pool size drinks and snacks were also available,
We eat in the Brasserie for dinner which was excellent tasty food with very quick service which was fantastic for us with our daughter only 2 we wanted to get her to bed for 7.30ish Breakfast, food and service were good with friendly attentive staff, my only complaint would be the staff work to hard! Most of the staff served dinner and breakfast.
Thanks for a very enjoyable stay

“first time stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Stayed at Slaley for the first time and on first appearances from the car park I thought it looked like any usual Travel Lodge/Premier Inn hotel. Inside the corridors and bar were nicely decorated and staff very welcoming and friendly. We were able to check in early. The bedrooms were again the same as any other run of the mill hotel and outdated however bed comfortable. On looking out of the window we faced a roof and no view at all which was a disappointment. The food in the bar was very expensive but tasty, costs around £8 for a sandwich and £12 for a burger. Drinks were also expensive, £9+ for a cocktail.

The Spa was also disappointing and looked just like a local leisure centre with a steamroom. The changing rooms were outdated and I couldn't get a shower cause they were not working. I ordered breakfast in the room for 8am and never recieved this until 9am. Beware any food which is brought to youe room incurs a £5 charge, they also add a 10% tip to every order in the bar for drinks and food and they also add a donation to charity which results in an expensive stay!

Overall I wouldn't rush back to stay at Slaley, It is not what I would say was luxury just average. I would recommend the outdoor activities centre in the grounds as we went quad biking and was really good fun, especially in the wet, snowy weather.

Room Tip: Request an updated room with a view before checking in

Dear gippa26,

Thank you for your review. I’m sorry that you found some aspects of your stay less than satisfactory.

I am however very grateful for your feedback as it enables me to address any issues that may have arisen with the team.

We spend a great deal of time evaluating our pricing and monitoring our competitors and similar hotels in order to ensure that we always offer value for money. I am sorry that on this occasion you found our food and drink prices to be expensive.

We do apply a 10% discretionary service charge to meals, we consider this to be fairly normal practice and will always remove the charge should a guest wish to tip via another method. We do pass on the service charge to the team at Slaley.

I am sorry that you found the £1 charitable donation on your room bill to be inappropriate. Again, this is discretionary however, to date, De Vere have raised over £1’000’000.00 for the Variety Club Childrens Charity through this practice.

Yours sincerely,

Sean Boyce

“Stay at Slaley Hall”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

We recently stayed at Slaley Hall having booked the half price Winter deal. Here's my review:

Positives
- The communal areas (corridors, informal seating areas, reception etc.) are gorgeous. Very decadent and give you high hopes for the rest of the hotel.
- All of the staff that we came in to contact with were unfailingly polite and helpful.
- The grounds are wonderful with some great walks.
- The room was meticulously clean.

Negatives
- The decor in the communal areas does not follow in to the bedrooms. I understand that the hotel is being renovated and only 20 of the rooms have been decorated so far. As it was the hotel room was tired and the decor (and TV!) outdated.
- The pool area (inc. steam room & sauna) was just ok. I expected it to be sumptuous and inviting, but it wasn't. The steam room and sauna were tiny and the jacuzzi didn't work on one of the days we were there. Similar facilities at my gym are much much better.
- The changing rooms for the pool / gym are in need of an upgrade. The wooden veneer was peeling, there were only 2 hairdryers and only 2 of the 4 showers were working. The shower cubicles were disgusting, the grout in the tiles covered in black mould.

Overall
I wouldn't recommend this hotel. I expected a little bit of luxury but it was average. If I had paid full price for my stay I would have been very very unhappy.

Dear Vanessa C,

Thank you for your review. I’m pleased that you found the public areas, grounds and the team at Slaley to be good however, I am disappointed that there were some aspects of your stay that weren’t up to scratch.

We are continuing the ongoing process of upgrading the bedrooms and TV’s in the hotel with not many now remaining. The vast majority of Slaley Hall has been refurbished gradually (with no disruption to guests) over the last three years. Work is currently being carried out to improve the leisure changing rooms. This aside, it would seem that your experience was still far from the usual high standards of hospitality and comfort ordinarily enjoyed by our guests.

I am grateful for the time that you’ve taken to share your experiences and hope that you will consider returning to Slaley Hall in the future.

Yours sincerely,

Sean Boyce

“Stay at the Hall”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Stayed for one night only to try it. Got deal for upgraded room, including dinner, breakfast and a bottle of wine in the room on arrival. Bearing in mind we stayed here 2 weeks ago and it was below freezing outside, we didn't avail ourselves of the golf course or the walks around the grounds. Food good at dinner and breakfast but price of drinks very high (bottles of Suavignon @ over £30 and cocktails £9+). Would stay again and use as base for exploring area and may consider their in-situ chalets.
