We arrived at Hexham after a long day of driving from York. We normally line up accommodations 48 hours ahead of arrival in a new city, but we had an awful time finding open wifi, so we landed in Hexham with no plans. We found a tourist information center which had a list of accommodations posted on a bulletin board, so my husband copied the list down and started phoning. High Reins had a room available, and the owner gave us detailed instructions on how to get from where we were to where they were.
The house is beautiful, and there is a lounge for the use of guests with a TV and comfy chairs. This is also where breakfast is served. Our ensuite room was large, the bed was comfortable, the bath was clean and well-equipped and we felt that we had some privacy. (This is not always the case in a B&B!) The view from our window was over a pleasant back garden.
Mr. Walton gave us several recommendations for restaurants for dinner. We ended up at an Italian place in Hexham with very good food and a nice atmosphere. Breakfast at High Reins was quite good; we had the full English breakfast which was prepared and served by Mrs. Walton. Both of the Waltons were helpful and friendly, and we spent a quiet, comfortable night in a pleasant room and were sent on our way with a good breakfast. The price was reasonable, too, and you can't ask much more than that!
