Essentially, I agree with EssexNeat.
First the positives: the location is great, right in the heart of Haydon Bridge (a picturesque little village). Gill (the owner) and her husband (whose name escapes me) were very friendly. We were allowed to use the dining room for take-away dinner, which was really helpful. We were also given free run of the kitchen at all times of the day and night. Any problems that were encountered were acknowledged and empathy and/or solutions offered. Breakfast was nice and ample. Rooms were comfortable and very spacious.
Now for the negatives: first impressions were not great - Gill left her 14 year old daughter to greet us. She was friendly enough, but a typical 14 year old (I have one myself). This meant that we were not clear immediately on which key was for which room (we rented two), on how to lock the front door (or even if we could), exactly where the upstairs room was, etc.
The place appears to have been physically put together on a budget - one of the acknowledged problems (which we only found out about after we arrived) was the water. The mains pressure is apparently shared with a whole row of houses. This means taking showers that alternate between freezing cold, boiling hot, no water and too much water, unless you decide to rise at 5am before the neighbours. The heated towel rail in the upstairs bathroom did not work, and attempting to close the curtains in the downstairs bedroom brought them down to the floor.
When we brought these issues up, we were told, "oh yes, that happens sometimes". It was merely a statement of fact that we should just accept, and not question the (I think) 230 quid per night that we were paying for 5 people.
I guess the lesson we learned is that the best B&Bs are those where the owners live in. All of the fittings and furnishings just had a cheap, ricketty feel to them - we were afraid to touch anything in case it broke. A coat of paint and fresh carpet does not a B&B make! All in all, I don't think it was really worth the money we shelled out, compared to all the other places we stayed on our trip.
